the problem with walmart is its extensive use of a low paid labour force both in store and suppliers from overseas. its been pointed out that walmart is so successful that it is destroying other businesses and inadvertantly destroying americas manufacturing industry. karl marx talks about this and points out really it is an end game played by all businesses - the game continues until all competition is destroyed big or small, all products and services are supplied by one supplier. walmart could be more friendly but it is the nature of most suppliers that everything be destroyed in the name of the dollar.

I also live in a small (10,000 pop.) town the just recently had a walmart built. I buy my food there as my shopping cart is 3 times fuller with my money... Do I care about the other 2 grocery stores? not really. I think its lame how much they charge for shit there. Now, neiter of these stores are "mom and pop" stores they are the other super giant here Albertsons, and a simi big Pauls. I feel no hurt for their corperation's. Now let me say this, theres a town south of me called Brueno, its tiny they have a bar slash hardware shop, a fishing store/gas station and a ***REAL*** mom and pop store for grocerys.... Thats the kind of buissiness (familys, running them) that I think Walmart would destroy had it moved into their community, but wal mart would be retarded to build that big of a store there becase theres not even enough people there to employ it (Just kidding the pop is probably around 500 or so..... But thats my thoughts. Corporations battle for coustomers, I dont care if a billion dollar company wipes out a 100 million dollar company, Low and behold there will be another super giant that takes walmart to the ground, will we be around to see it, who knows????? This is how the world works. Unless you live in a stick or mud hut on BLM land, hunt and grow your own grub, never rode in a car and are using a windmill to creat the electricity your using to read this while using some sort of free wireless internet on a computer you made from mining your own metal ore, you've contributed to the maddness the we call this world... But I'm selling plans for $19.95 on how to build your own rocket ship so you can fly to mars.... J/K :)

throwing my arms up in a stupor as I hate greedy corporations too, its hard. I think all things would be 100 times better if every million dollar corporation gave more back to the world. Almost like a world Niceity tax. the people of the world all voted for what changes need to happen and every year this tax money was used to better our world.....????????????????????????????????????. crazy...

This town doesn't WANT THEM THERE. What does a business gain by forcing themselves upon the people who don't want them there? "Bend over and take it, you know you want me." All they get out of the deal is a store that doesn't get enough business to justify it’s existence and a sexual harassment suit.

Wal * Mart offers lower prices to poor people. It's unfair to ask poor people to "pay more" just to keep little guys in business, but that's what corporate-fascists want. They want monopolies to rule so poor people only have ONE "option"-- them.

There are alternatives in other areas. Around my neck of the woods, we shop at second-hand shops, McKay's (bartering/trade), flea markets and yard sales. Occasionally I'll go to the local grocer (fairly competitive) or a dollar store. But, my wife's family are WalMart-AHOLICS.

It makes me sick, but I can't say..."Hey! You poor people stop getting good prices!"

It's a real twisted situation. It's real bad.

I am just thankful that we have those alternatives I mentioned above...UNTIL they are made "ILLEGAL" (which wouldn't surprise me!)

If the town (and I mean the ENTIRE town) truly doesn't want them there, they won't be there. WalMart has successfuly been chased out of 6 small towns in MD with it's tail between it's legs. If SOME of the town doesn't want them there, then that part of the town has the freedom to NOT shop at WalMart. If a few members of the town don't want them there, that part of the town has the freedom to shut the fuck up and move somewhere else. Democracy = mob rules. Participate or shut up. Welcome to America.

And it is still utter bullshit that WalMart went to the WTO to complain. This is not within the scope of the WTO, WalMart knows it, and whoever started this rumor is just another anarchist asshole. You think you can acheive world peace and equality through anarchy, but you'll fail without armed insurrection, violent overthrow and a bloodbath. There are factions in this world that will not evolve.

I haven't shopped Walmart in over eighteen years. I don't miss it. But it's killed a lot of small businesses in my small town. And once it runs the competition out. It only stocks what it wants to. The Arkansas powers aren't in Washington any longer why is this monstrosisty still growing? Do the poor folks think it's the only alternative because they've been fed their smiley faced commercials. Get real folks. They are only interested in their bottomline, not your communities. Wise up.

Got to love their smiley faced discounts signs....not. And now they are petitioning for a patent on the smiley face....hey he was around long before they were and I hope the legal powers don't give them the power to control him too!

What is WTO? I'm Canadian so I'm assuming this is an American thing.

On a similar topic, one of the smaller cities/towns in my cities metro had plans for a WalMart. Just before construction was to begin they were brought to court as they were building it beside a religious refuge and they said it would disturb them. Im not sure if they won or not, but I really hope they got the shitty end of that stick. WalMart sucks! (and so does every other big box development).

And folks anyone remember KMart? They were the big folks until Clinton gained office and made the Arkansas guys above the labor laws. KMart still exists, but Walmart has severely injured it.

The thing about KMart though they had to perform according to the labor laws of the day. With the advent of Walmart, the government changed the laws to suit the corporation.

Poor folks don't have to shop there if they would look at other alternatives, but their lives are busy digging and scraping to get by and Walmart markets to them telling them they are the only alternative. While the highly paid executives and the "Walton" family I bet are laughing and making jokes about them.
