Was it wrong for Kerry to mention Cheney's daughter?

The guy on the newsradio I was listening to this morning on the way to school was making WAAAAY too big a deal of it. He actually said that people think of the words "gay" and "lesbian" differently, and that he thought it wouldn't have been so bad if Kerry had used the word "gay" instead of "lesbian"! Is lesbian a bad word or something and I just didn't know it? fuckin stupid if you ask me.

 

Much ado about nothing in my opinion. It's just an attempt to steal thunder from another convincing debate win by Kerry.

 

It was kinda low, but when you consider the world of politics, I'm surprised people are even talking about it.

 

I suppose that one reasonable statement about this kind of thing is that we should generally leave the children of the candidates out of it. I remember some of the brutal comments Rush Limbaugh made about Chelsea Clinton.

What do you all think of this question: If Mary Cheney were unemployed (another legitimate campaign issue along with gay marriage) and Kerry brought it up, would there be outrage? Should there be? Or are these so different as issues that they are not comparable?

 

Virtually everyone who is anti-gay will likely vote for Bush, I think it was aggressive to point out, but not immoral.

 

It wasn't morally wrong, but maybe not a good move. It doesn't matter, it shouldn't be such a big issue, but the media constantly picks out trivial shit like this to focus on.

 

I think istead of a debate they should just have an old fashioned name calling contest to see who is a better candidate cuz thats all they really do anyway

There probably wouldn't be as much talk about it, in general, no. Personally, I would have still considered that to be a "low blow." It was a personal attack. Pointing out hypocracy in either party isn't bad, and I don't think this was even that big of a deal, but the sneaky way that Kerry did it was sort of disgusting. He even hesistated like he was thinking to himself, "Should I really say this?..."

 

1.) It reminded mainstream (possible swing voters) of the Bush/Cheney Team's divisiveness within their own party, their hypocrisy, and their extremism in social issues.

2.) It was used to try to slow down Bush's momentum with the religious right by reminding all those bigots out there that she's a *gasp* lesbian.

 

I don't think it was wrong to bring her up, but the way he did it was a little creepy. He didn't seem sure of himself. Come out with it already if you're going to say it.

 

Hell YES! She's not running for anything.

 

Then I would suggest that Dick Cheney not mention her sexuality either, which he has done more than once before these debates.

I'm agreeing she is an Individual, and should NOT be a subject of this election.

 

I think it was a cheap shot, and I really don't see how it is relavent. W even said, "In America, people can live how they want to live, and it is to be respected." But living how you want to live and protecting marriage are 2 different things. Be gay if you want, but leave marriage the way it is and was intended to be. When John Edwards brought it up in the Vice Presidential debate, Mary Cheney didn't appreciate it, so I'm sure she didn't like Kerry dragging her into the middle of the last debate, either.

The dipshit doesn't realize that the constitution is there to secure rights, not take them away.
