We Americans have to be the biggest prudes!

I'm interpreting this as sarcasm, but depending on how broadly you want to define prostitution - you're statement is not entirely untrue.

Well I'm not too fond of the stoneing metaphor - but the fact is, it's entirely acceptable in this culture (an many others throughout history) to settle upon a mate for financial/security reasons - real or imagined. Now there are all sorts of clever justifications for this, but it always boil down to a willingness to depend on another person for a level of comfort in exchange for "love". This is, of course, the antithesis of gender equality.

 

American culture is pretty retarded for a lot of reasons - this just being another one.
