And that's all it is, a sentiment, is that really so bad? Do you really have to belittle it? Come on, i've spent the last 5 years fighting this east against west war, I've covered walls with peace signs and disgust at our actions in the war, anti bush graffiti, i've marched, held meetings, i'll do whatever i can to stop it, i posted this thread for people to post some comical photo's, not to argue about what we're going to do against it, of course i'm aware of the danger, and yes i'm aware that this could really kick off, but i'm not going to start shitting myself, unfortunately i have lost 2 family members in an explosion, i know the effect this has on a family, so can only estimate the effect that this will have on a whole nation, yes its huge. It's ok to shit yourself, but i dont want to hear about. The photo you did was well funny by the way. and you're right i dont own the thread, that was froid job, did i actually write that?
Its not a bad sentiment, but if you walked around in a t-shirt that said that or if it really was written on the side of a bus it would be pretty lame....thats all I'm saying Not trying to belittle people dying.
I thought the mock-photo of the bus was funny & I believe that one of the 'Assets of the British Character' is its sense of humour. Nonetheless I am in the privileged position of not having lost someone dear to me in the bombings. If we loose the ability to laugh - even in the most dire situations. The Terrorists have won!. As was mentioned - The IRA held a reign of terror in London throughout the 1970s & 1980 but they justified their terror by saying we were doing exactly the same to their people in Northern Ireland. I don't want to get deep about all that now. Please let's all stay cool on this thread. Personally I am not afraid of further bombs in London - I am more afraid of the British backlash against Immigrants & Moslems.I don't mean hate-crimes - I mean draconian & repressive laws. The Brits are an extremely tough lot & can make the world tremble with awe & forboding as they did at one time -many moons ago. Turning the House of Commons & Buckingham Palace into Fortresses are examples of this mania that is currently gripping us.
I know that ... My message is "Yeah we're scared ... scared of where this all might end up ... but what's more is that we're all fucking sick of this war on terror and the shit that we're getting from it ... So stop giving it the "We survived the blitz" bollocks and tell us Mr Blair ... what are you really doing about it?"
I knew this would be controversial. The images I made aren't intended to belittle the sentiment of werenotafraid or disrespect anyone involved in the bombings. We were all affected by this in some way, a friend of mine missed one of the tube bombs by minutes, I'm sure many of us know people who were affected or had a lucky escape. What they do represent is a different approach to dealing with what happened. Show the world we're not afraid? Unafraid of whom? The non-white, non-christian world? While I'm sure the intentions behind werenotafraid.com were nothing less than honourable, it can easily be seen as empty and jingoistic sloganeering. For that reason that site rankles a little with me. So in place of sanctimonious defiance I choose self-deprecating irony as my way of getting to grips with the event. Humour is a valid way of dealing with adversity and arguably more typically "British" than the "stiff upper lip" so beloved of the American media but which even as a national stereotype is outdated by half a century.
Domain Name Server got updated sooner than I thought it would ... we'll be online properly in the next few days Thanks for the continuing inspiration Jon
Haha, fair enough man, it is just another way of dealing with it i suppose. But you didn't consider how i might feel, I felt like i was being attacked by trying to deal with it with the admittedly sloganistic " we are not afraid," dare i say bandwagon. I had just come off the We are not afraid site and some of the pictures were quite amusing so i thought i'd set one up on here. If you look back at the early posts on here, i'm being blanked until i got a little irrate, thats just not cool. i must confess i should have thought it through but somehow feel if i was to create a we're shitting ourselves thread i would have been jumped on by somebody else. I'm not a stranger to the galleries, so please dont treat me like one. We share the same goals in all of this, so lets work together instead of childishly bickering over who has the best slogan.
I like both sides of the spectrum here... the we are shitting ourselves pics are just funny...yeah it is funny in a morbid kinda way but still funny... the we are not afraid ones are just great... thats my 2 cents...
