I enjoyed discussing with you Have a good one But one final thing.. It's not trying to prove god is real. It's to prove you can't outrule the idea of a higher existance. To this day I've seen nothing to credit the argument that there isn't one.
Wow. I am really embarrassed for SirTokesALot. I know something about the Bible because from 0-18 i was raised in a Christian Church School and was heavily indoctrinated. Most people who went to this church or school still consider themselves very conservative Christians, and it is sad. First of all, the hebrew word in the old testament that is used for the seven days of creation is used many other times throughout the old testament, and every single time it refers to a litteral 24 hour period. There are other words that the king james bible translates as 'day' that are from a different hebrew word that can be more loosely used to represent a period of time. If 'period of time' was intended, then one of those words would have been used instead. During the seven days of creation, Adam was created, and Adam's geneology is given all the way up to the birth of Jesus which was two thousdand years ago. Since the "heavens" themselves were created during these seven 24 hour periods, this means that the Bible claims the entire universe began only 6000 years ago, which makes it unscientific. There are contradictions in the Bible, especially between different books. One verse says you can lose your salvation, the other says you can't. Christians are so stubbornly unwilling to let go of their belief that they ignore this blatant contradiction and continue to profess that the Bible is the Word of God. They are stupified by fundamentalism. The reason Christians are so interested in debating with people who do not believe the religion, is because they are horrified by their reasoning and logic. It scares the bejesus out of them! If you simply observe the physical evidence in the world, do you see a reason to believe in god? No, you do not. The reason people believe in god is because so many people tell them god exists. If 50 people told you god exists and 50 told you he didnt, and you were very impressionable, you would believe in god. The reasoning behind this is obvious. In order for someone to realize that god is just a delusion, they need to read a book such as "The God Delusion". Simple forum arguements, although fun, are not likely to enlighten a weak mind. :-/
There is evidence of God... it's just internal, and because of that, isn't empirically measurable. You just have to keep searching and being open minded to the possibility of a higher power, or transcendence, if you aren't, then don't expect to find anything. What books like the God delusion does, is only furthers your inability to become aware of reality. I have read that book, and it is full of crap, honestly. The author talks how theists use logical fallacies, yet he is blatantly oblivious to his own; It is pretty funny, actually. He does make good points about organized religions, and about morality, but that's about it. Dawkins is pretty arrogant, and his atheist pride is rather annoying. You say that Christians talk about what they talk about is because they are terrified about what you are talking about, and you are probably right about that. But you can also switch that over to you, and say that perhaps you're terrified that Christian might be right... and for what reason, I don't know - You can go back and forth with this forever. And if you continue to play that "he's scared of this, or he's scared of that, and that's why he believes", then you will be stuck there, and never make any realizations on your own. Also, I don't understand how evolution disproves of a higher power... that just doesn't make any sense. Personally, I don't see why people are so threatened by that theory. I actually find it quite humbling, and it makes me feel even more connected with life. But, there is something really silly about evolution that I just can't put my finger on. I think we are missing something huge here. The more I get involved with threads like this, the less I feel compelled to write about anything on this subject. It's just the same old rubbish to me. Everyone has their own time when they start to understand reality for what it really is. Just don't worry about it, everything will be ok. Btw, what's so weak minded and delusional about believing in a higher power? Even Einstein, in his later years, understood that there was some creator, and because of that, became a deist (A God that creates and forgets about us.) Many people in history, that have been said to have an IQ of 200 were pantheists, atheists, agnostics, and theists. Even Stephen Hawking (iq 200) is a pantheist. So that whole "if you believe in a higher power, then you must have a lower IQ", rationalization is pretty bogus. I have a powerful sense that most people are just regurgitating other peoples ideas with little thought. True, all ideas are pretty much regurgitations in their own way, but some just pretty much copy and paste the ideas of others without first further understanding what it is that they are learning. Many people go ahead and read Christian/Atheistic works, and get so excited by the ideas, that they forget to think and to feel out these ideas. Be skeptical, especially the ideas of others. This is how you come to truth.
i used to believe in nothing..but after my second mushroom trip i realised that something must be guiding me. i do not believe in worshipping this thing that is guiding me simply because i feel no need to. i do not believe in heaven or hell..but i view death as another birth. it's hard for me to explain it, but it's like your life is the prelife to another life..and when you die you get pushed into that next life. i guess this idea is basically reincarnation..but i think karma has something to do with all this. the things you did wrong in the current life may come back and hit you in the next stage...
That's how I see it, too, maddhatter. You create your own heaven or you can create your own hell; choose where you want to be. The way I see it, living a good life, where you try to better yourself, is worshiping something higher - Just to be in a blissful, aware-ful, state of mind.
