If you give a poor person money, they will buy what they need, the money immediately returns to the economy, the product they bought will be produced again, someone will have a job producing it again, investors profit from the company that produces it.


If you give a rich person money, they will lock it up in the Cayman Islands in an off-shore account, not to return for a very long time.

Giving to the poor is good for the economy.

 

Interesting thread. I have to admit that at first, as I was reading the intial post, the hair started raising on the back of my neck. Those feelings that most represent ugliness to me began to surface within myself. That's some serious anger and hatred spewing out there.


I took a breath and read on. I saw anger on both sides of the issue. Attackers and defenders rage through this thread. I wonder, what can ever be solved when we go at each other in such ways. Not that I have an answer, but if I can't begin to understand each side for what it is...just another persons view and then begin with the problem, what chance do I have?

I was on welfare at one time in my life.....I was a active drug addict for 17 years....I was one of 'those kind of people'.

Today, I am a a mother with beautiful children and a very successful career and a loving partner. I'm a homeowner with car payments (blah). I'm choosing to be informed and 'a part of', rather than full of fear and 'a part from'. If society hadn't helped me when I wasn't able to help myself, I wouldn't be here today.

I'll agree, we have many systems that are in need of discussion to recreate their ability to be successful in our society. As society grows together we will always need to be open to changing social programs to fit an ever changing society. Anger and hatred never have solved much from my point of view, so hopefully, someday we'll be able to be civil to each other and accept others faults with compassion.

You mention that you have "children", so you must have more than one. Didn't you consider your finances before having these children? It's always wise to plan ahead before making important, life effecting, decisions. Have you considered a part-time job? BTW. I don't oppose welfare, I oppose the abuse of welfare.

Hmmmm. Very strange line of reasoning. Lets see, watch Jenny Jones and eat bon-bons and let taxes feed and care for my children; consider it a "right" to be fed, clothed and sheltered - or, heaven forbid - get off the couch and get a minimum wage job, work my way through the ranks to the top....Yep. "Crackers", as you call us, are around 75% of the American population; "nubians", are around 12%. Thats says that there are more than 6 times as many "Crackers" in America than there are "nubians". Rightfully "Crackers" should compose 75% of welfare roles and "nubians" only 12%, as opposed to the 38.8% "Crackers" and 37.2% "nubians". Sometimes, babies don't always come "as planned". You're right, it is wise to plan ahead. Our plan was for me to finish school...I only had two years left after I had my baby, now I have one. It is more feasible for us, for me to devote myself to school full-time and the children, than work at some dead-end job forever. Once I graduate, I'll be able to make more than enough money to quit assistance. BTW, I do a work-study job at school, but that is only 9 hrs a week, and only during the school year. I don't sit at home and eat bon-bons. I get up early and work at home all day taking care of my children. Once I start school again in a few weeks, I'll be there until 3 every day. When I get home, I'll get to say hi and bye to my husband before he goes to work until 12 or 1am. Where do i fit an extra part-time job in?

While Roosevelt did manage to halt the downward spiral of our country and temporarily stop the bleeding (as opposed to Hoover's plan of waving his dick in the air) caused by the market crash, it was WWII that got us going again. Without the war, America would have more or less stayed where it was, but not get any worse. While Roosevelt did much to end the loss, the millions of jobs created by the war as well as the millions of potential workers leaving the country (one unemployed person signing up for the Army and heading off to Japan is one less unemployed person on the street) is what started us off again. Factories were running 24 hours a day and there was no end of work to be done. Prior to the war, it was damn near impossible to get a job that didn't involve building something for the government.

As much of a prick as he was, we have Hirohito to thank for pulling us out of the Depression.

 

Maybe instead of giving some much money to welfare, we should give it in the form of tax breaks to small businesses hiring unemployed people? But this would also be overly easy to abuse.

 

Leave it to a Republican to say that war is good for the economy. That's a lie and Clinton proved it.

You can't say that WWII wasn't good for the economy. On it's own the war effort created millions of jobs virtually overnight, and it eliminated millions of unemployed workers in the process. I didn't say all wars are good for the economy, I said that war was good for the economy. And it was better for the economy that FDR was, although to be fair FDR was a genius in his time.

 

As I said, I do not oppose welfare, I oppose its abuse. You are not an abuser in my opinion. You and yours deserve all the assistance you receive. God bless you and may your future be bright. The FACT is that the majority of people on welfare DO work, but a fucking burger flipping job at Mc Donald's or waitressing at a Waffle House doeesn't pay the bills, pay for childcare, pay for food, or put a roof over your head. And you can fucking forget shit like clothes, school supplies, furniture, a reliable car, or health insurance.

As for having extra kids to get extra welfare money....First off, getting an actual welfare check (not medicaid, not food stamps, I mean actual money) is next to IMPOSSIBLE to get, at least here in the state of Ga. And if you have another baby while recieving it you DON'T recieve extra money for it. You have to apply for something like 24 jobs in 2 weeks time (and show proof of it) in order to even be eligible for it, and continue the job search with the Department of Labor after you begin recieving your check. Plus, you can only recieve a real welfare check for no more than 2 years......So tell me, all of these crackhead whores out there having 9 kids at a time, what do you suppose they do after that 2 yr time period is up? And how the hell are they even getting welfare if they're just sitting on their ass watching Jenny Jones and eating bon bons? Fact is that is not at all what's happening except perhaps on the rarest of occasions, and you people are just looking for any excuse you can to talk shit about people who are down on their luck.

I have seen this sadly in my own family who abuse welfare. I acually had a cousin tell me. "Yeah, I get so much money a month and the funny thing is you all are paying for it."
What sux is I have a full time job have to pay $30 a month for my medication(because my health care stinks) and all he has to do is dial a phone and gets his pills for free. Yes, I said he. He lives with a women. She works and he claims he is a single father with 2 kids so he can get welfare.
He admits he does not want to work.

Wow, that's really fucked up Crow. Welfare is easy to abuse those, you could easily fake the 24 job apps in 2 weeks. If people weren't so greedy, i'd advise doing away with welfare, and lettting private organizations fill in.

 

People just dont get it, even in the state of michigan i do belive you have to be looking for a job and can only get welfare for so long. Now me, Im classified as disabled. So i get social security. The problem is there are no jobs out there right now, at least no job that will hardly pay you enough to get by on. At least not in this area. Get over it people there is nothing you are going to be able to do about it. It is all up to the government, they make all the rules that all of us are stuck with. I will tell you this, in reality you have no say!

For those people out there who need it, I am all for giving it to them and i always have been for giving it to those who need it. Even when i was working, You see I am not greedy. Even when i was working i was proud of the fact that i could pay in some money to help those who are down on there luck.

In conclusion get real people there are things out there that are alot more waste on your money than welfare. Such as war and a lot of government over spending. When you get right down to it welfare is'nt even a drop in the bucket.

I want to make one other thing clear though, i do not support abuse of the system.

 

One thing i would like to say about this, I as said earlier support the welfare system for those who need it. Think about this also though. Even the ones who are abusing it.They are not taking your money.The government is giving it to them! If you really have serious complaints bitch at the government, that is if you really think it will do any good. People dont give the money to themselves. The only way they can get it is if your uncle sam hands it to them. Therefore dont blame the people. BLAME THE GOVERNMENT!
