Tonight I have a six-pack from the Samuel Adams' LongShot series. It consists of three beers from the top three finalists of the 2006 Sam Adams' Homebrew Contest. It comes in a neat little box containing two Boysenberry Wheat ales, two Dortmunder Exports, and two Old Ales which clock in at 10.6%. I am not the biggest fan of SA's beers, which often seems a bit too average for my tastes, but this is pretty decent stuff for the price. This is the first time I saw it at the store, so I thought I'd give it a shot. I am pleasantly surprised so far.

I also have a six-pack of Saranac Carmel Porter and a couple bottles of Brooklyn Brown ale in the fridge.

Nothing too fancy, but good drinking nevertheless.

    EDIT (3/3/07, 12:49AM):

Out of the SA LongShot sixer, the Old Ale is by far the best. This is actually an outstanding Old Ale. I am impressed.

i know of a brewery called real ale, but not a brand or style called "real ale"

or instead of identifying a particular beer, are you specifying real ale as opposed to faux ale, and if so, what has been passed off as ale that really isnt? (my guess is genessee cream ale is not in fact a top fermenting ale but a lager...i dont know this as fact, but from what i understand its not a legitimate cream ale)

    i dunno....

anyway, i'll likely have soymilk or something along with some meds.

well, this isnt what i'm drinking tonight, cause what i'm drinking tonight will be soymilk and water, maybe some juice...

but i just ordered another (my third) bottle of Chateau du Lacazes 1982 Armagnac (a real steal on sale...but for some reason pricier than the last couple times i got it....still, its a damn good bargain and I feel i'm getting what i'm paying for: good brandy, damn good price)

    http://www.internetwines.com/rws26441.html

and a bottle of unibroue's 2004 special vintage, which i've not seen for sale anywhere around here. and has good reviews on BA

    http://www.internetwines.com/rws30401.html

i'm excited. i've been drinking a lot of scotch lately, and always drink a lot of beers. its been a really long time since i've had brandy, and i think that it will be nice to have a glass of armagnac with a cigar in a few days when i can smoke properly again....

I'm gonna pick up a six pack on the way to my friend's gig (at his house) tonight... anyone have any recommendations? I've gotten really into Boddington's Pub Ale lately. Might have to take some of that, but I'm not sure if he has any good beer mugs.

it really depends on your personal tastes. but i think boddingtons is decent, and if you like it you may also like tetley's english ale, if you haven't tried it. a bit better (more full bodied) would be just about anything by samuel smiths...but be warned their stouts and the taddy porter are quite dark, heavy and robust (i love them, myself, but not everyone likes them)

if you're looking for something refreshing to the palate but big on taste, pilsner urquell is terrific, as is hoegaarden.

if you want something rich and creamy, bellhaven scottish ale sounds good to me right now, personally.

actually, i think tetleys sounds really good right now. i havent had it in probably a little over a year.
