Well then I'm sorry. Ahhh fuck all this. I'm just jealous cause you people are so cool with your different backgrounds and all I can say is : I'm 100% Bosnian Croatian
Ohh.. I got asked this a while ago. I said English seeing as I've lived in England my whole life. And I'm a british citizen. But Im very much Indian. And although I've never lived in India, Hindi is my mothertongue. So i don't know. I love England though. With a passion. So I pick english. EDIT: you can tell im indian though, by looks of course.
i agree 95% or so...but almost entirely. i actually get really annoyed at things like this. like a dear friend of mine whose family is of irish ancestry. she always talks about how she can drink alot "because i'm irish" and how she got pissed off that they "scheduled the irish girl to work the morning after st patricks day" i just think BITCH YOURE FROM OHIO! you're at least 4th generation AMERICAN if not more! you don't know shit about ireland, you just like to drink! never even been to ireland! it gets on my nerves... i also dont think it makes much sense to call black american ladies and gentlemen "african" americans if we aren't gonna call all these white americans "european" americans. shit, if black people have to be identified by genetic heritage, so should white people. if thats the case the ONLY flat out americans are what people like to call "native" americans. so white people are "regular" americans, but the people who are of american, asian or african genetic stock have to have some special identifying title?? its bullshit. we're all americans cause we're born in america and grew up in american culture. our families have different histories and come from different parts of the world but you'll have that in any country. people aren't irish-american unless they are american citizens who happened to be born in ireland and then moved here. same with african-americans, asian-americans, italian-americans, and so on. if you're born here, you're just a plain old american. we share a common culture and a common NATIONAL identity and history. however there is something to be said about knowing ones roots, too. when it comes to geneology, i'm primarily scottish and german in my family history, but still the closest i get to being a european immigrant is my great grandparents on my mothers side. far enough back theres also some english, dutch, and norweigan. farther back still one of my ancestors (and his ancestors) were americans all the way, a mohawk interpreter for samuel de champlain allegedly who married a european woman (probably french, they were far more open to intermarriage) either way, regardless of some stupid convoluted family tree, i'm american, all the way, even if there are things i often dislike about my country.:cheers2:
Oh I am sorry , I thought the thread was "what are you" ie ethnic stuff Mostly lived in Britain. I learned a tiny bit of Russian , very little German , fuck all Czech( grandmother's tongue). Because everyone speaks English - its never been a priority with the other mountains of stuff I have on.. But I am learning Russian , when I have time spare. So what? Yes I'm extremely familiar with Russian and Habsburg culture , sorry to disappoint. British born , mostly lived here.Passports dont mean anything. _______________________________________________ The point was that identity is a matter of "fact and degree". Like when my job applications were binned because "well he's a fucking foreigner really...." A British Asian would be classed as "less British than" me by many "Britons". Blonde haired "John Smith" they'd class as "more British" than me. Fascinating how you feel qualified to tell me what "Britishness" means even tho you've never lived here ....
but can a foreigner easily gain citizenship? i'm used to the idea that, at least in theory, if a foreigner goes through the proper legal channels they can gain US citizenship, from almost anywhere in the world. for some its easier than others. for instance, if a cuban person sets foot on US dry soil, they are allowed to stay as americans. if they are caught before they get here, they get sent away. also there are some broken highway bridges no longer connected to anything in the florida keys, the part of US soil closest to cuba. despite being built by america and within american borders, its not considered "dry soil" if its a damaged bridge no longer connected to the land, so if they get stuck there they get shipped back (bullshit, if you ask me) mexicans, on the other hand, have a harder time legally gaining US citizenship, which is a major reason for all the illegal immigration here from mexico. i know other countries have different rules though. like if you're genetically close enough to being a german immigrant (i believe third generation or less?) an american can revoke their us citizenship and become a german, regardless of whether they even know the german language. on the other hand, to my understanding, a person of exclusively asian descent born in germany and raised there may never be considered a citizen of germany? this is what they told us in a government class in highschool, or how i understood it anyway. i dont know its entirely true, but it seems fucked up to me. so i'm just curious...even if you are very open to people of foreign nationalities, is it very possible to become an actual citizen?
I didn't decide it was silly. I just decided I don't want to argue. Cause I don't feel like it. Others got my point. You , of course, didn't.
Hmm....I have to admit that I don't actually know. But I don't think its VERY possible. Unless you get a secure job or marry a Croatian citizen... Also, I am ashamed to admit that I don't know anything about laws here. I skipped way too many Politics classes in high school
hmm....good idea. you see, i love my country and culture in many ways, but there is a vast amount i dislike, as well, and lets face it - it looks like things are gonna be pretty fucked up here for a long time! if we don't stop with our international policies, it will only be a matter of time before other countries start waging actual wars on us, rather than certain individuals performing acts of terrorism..... frankly, i'd like to get out. so, my dear lady, when may i begin the wooing process? if you give me your address, i can have flowers and wine and chocolates sent to you every day
I was born in Louisiana where our culture is a pretty big thing. Our ancestors immigrated from Canada, France, Spain, and Germany. They were called Acadians, or "Cajuns". My relatives over there still make the traditional dishes. Maw Maw passed the recipes down to me and my sisters (and my mom). Now we make them. We grew up hearing our grandparents talk in Cajun french. My dad even speaks that way sometimes. I wish I had inherited some of the cajun ways of speaking, but somehow I never picked up the accent. My great-grandfather on my mom's side had an ice factory. He was involved in early refrigeration in LaPlace, Louisiana. You can read about it here if you want to: http://www.stjohnparish.com/montz/mrmontz.htm I feel pretty connected to my heritage.
Erm we're comparing immigrant nation ( America) vs indigeneous nation( Britain).Sorry if thats too complex for you... Your "point" that I was "talking shite"? I thought people saw it the other way round... But yeah you're obviously the "Britain expert" here...
I get that. It annoys me, people just assume I'm less british. I'm less english than others, because I have different ancestry. There was this stupid programme about "How british are you?" or somink Where they interviewed some old ladies complaining because they were the only "english" people at the mall one day. Made me soo mad, cos they werent. They were the only WHITEs there. But yeah, nicely phrased.
Hahahaha....You know, you could skip all that and do what the Chinese here do. Offer someone a decent amount of money to marry you. I think the price is around 15 000 euros. But we can negotiate I like you, so I'm willing to help you out But seriously though...Where would you like to go ?
Ofcourse by definitons passport , rights , where you've lived ,etc you are as British as anyone. But no one should stop you being allowed to call yourself "Asian British" or even British and Asian- if you wanted to. Unfortunately , no matter what we sound like , me and you will always be classed by some people as "foreigners"..
