To Maggie, Sera, and Hippy: As long as you continue to demonize half this country we are always to be completely dividied and never understand each other. You can 'mock' what they call family values, but it is only going to incense half this country and make them more united. You know, some of their ideas are actually pretty good for this country: things like charity, organizations such as the boy scouts or the YMCA, maitenance of the family, pride in your community, etc etc. This is what they mean when they talk about 'traditional family values.' I don't agree with everything they believe in(who believes in everything 100%?). I dont like how many conservatives attack homosexuals, but that does not mean their other ideas are bunk. Until you can realize that, you are part of the problem with this country, not the solution. We have a lot of problems in this country economically. We need to figure out how to get better paying jobs without forcing all of our companies overseas. It would be great if we could get back to where only 1 parent had to work. How do we do that without destroying our economy? We can manufacture our own products(like maggie suggested), but without putting up stiff tarrifs against China and other third world countries, no one will buy them because they will be too expensive. Once you start doing that, there will be major repercussions. Life isnt as simple as you guys want to make it out to be. You can't just pass an act and expect companies to pay people more and everything will be great. It isnt some great Republican plot to keep poor people down. You always need to keep the big picture in view Sometimes asking questions are more helpful than outright attacks and name calling. hippy: who is defending this country that has to go on welfare?
A good portion of the soldiers that I know have to be on public assistance to make up the difference between family expenses and the meager pay they're given. And most of my family is military-based. And, thank you very much, I am quite content to demonise not just the conservatives, liberals, or liberatarians, but most of the apathetic society. As a whole, we allow far too much crap to go on without thinking of the greater good of our children, OUR FUTURE. And in a lot of ways, I don't see our problems as the fault of the politicians, but the voters for NOT sticking up more strongly for what they know should happen.
well thats wrong. You'll find no objection from me for raising the pay of our soldiers. They should be well taken care of.
Conservative "traditional family" is counter progress. Conservative America is the land of Do it yourself and hand over all economic freedoms and power to corporations. Dog eat dog mentality. Corporate welfare is all right because corporations create jobs well without governmental support that taxpayers fund corporations would not be able to create shit. Public programs are not handouts they are just people helping people indirectly and not excepting something in return but an overall healthier society. A true conservative society would be a feudalistic society. "The care of human life and happiness...is the first and only legitimate object of good government." Thomas Jefferson Not conservative obsession with security. "We can have a democratic society or we can have the concentration of great wealth in the hands of the few. We cannot have both." Supreme Court Justice Louis Brandeis
Undrinkable water in your area. Damn, that must suck. But, at least there is a STANDARD (created by Liberals) that your local gov't (must be Republicans) are failing to uphold by pressuring the water co. Oh, so they named a road after a Republican President. Wow! I guess that means that Republicans came up with the idea for the highway system. Damn, I've been mistaken ALL these years! I bet they came up with everything else I named too, reckon? Sure take your $300 and build a highway. Good luck. Call me when it is done and I'll come to the ribbon cutting.
Yet Republicans overwhelmingly voted for the social security act Should we force people to help other people? i see your thomas jefferson and raise you these: "The democracy will cease to exist when you take away from those who are willing to work and give to those who would not."-TJ "I think we have more machinery of government than is necessary, too many parasites living on the labor of the industrious."-TJ "Government big enough to supply everything you need is big enough to take everything you have .... The course of history shows that as a government grows, liberty decreases."- TJ "The policy of the American government is to leave its citizens free, neither restraining them nor aiding them in their pursuits."- TJ "Our tenet ever was . . . that Congress had not unlimited powers to provide for the general welfare, but were restrained to those specifically enumerated; and that, as it was never meant that they should provide for that welfare but by the exercise of the enumerated powers, so it could not have been meant they should raise money for purposes which the enumeration did not place under their action."- TJ You picked the wrong founding father to quote on socialism. In fact, its probably best not to quote any founding father for socialism.
Let me just ask you one question. Answer me honestly, Megara, please. Do you consider yourself to be a follower of Jesus' principles? Yes or no?
Not a fair question, Libertine. Anyone can be a follower of Jesus' principles and act on them differently, interpret them in a different way. And hold different political views. So his following or not following Jesus is not relevant here.
Um, eisenhower championed the interstate highway system. The earlier highway system the Lincoln Highway, was paid for entirely by autombile suppliers and manufacturers and donations from private individuals. cool, hopefully i can get a long enough strip to test 0-60 on my car. How much does a highway cost?
i concur. I believe in something greater than myself, if you must know. And no, the almighty dollar isnt it
Should we force people to follow laws? Should we force children to go schools? Should we force employers to be fair? Should we force companies to follow regulations? We are forced to do many things for the greater good of society. Nevertheless I agree with the quote I quoted.
Ah...influenced by what? the German what? Which was created by whom? Oops. But, that's not the point. We are using the term "PUBLIC" not "PRIVATE", thus Eisenhower took a "public stance" (for the people--a liberal, progressive stance, much like T.R. did a lot!).
If the laws are just, yes. Children arent fully developed so they cannot make a rational decision on their own. if they want to do business, sure. Agreed, we give up freedom to live under a government. However, you cant justify EVERYTHING that way. Nevertheless I agree with the quote I quoted.[/QUOTE]
are you refering to the autobahn? that was 1932. Is there an earlier one? Lincoln highway: 1913 eisenhower highway: 1956 You said that we have liberals to thank for highway, i do not see it. Big nasty evil corporations built our first real highway system. You have basically just usurped all things conservatives have done saying they were done for the 'public good, progressive, thus liberal" Fine, if you want to take all things the government does as liberal, then i seriously hope you take ALL the bad this government has done as liberal. Let me guess, those are not progressive, thus conservative. rofl.
My thoughts on god are not pertinent to this convo. anyways, we've gotten WAY off topic about traditional family values.
The Lincoln Highway was built for the public? Wasn't it? Or Was it? Progressive is anything that leads to progress....ROFL.... So, you're right--all the non-progressive steps taken by this government is not progressive, thus "conservative".
So, you think Jesus is God? Then you DO subscribe to his principles, huh? So, why not apply them to reality?
