that not true... most people go to see the soldier with the big furry hat who keeps guard... you can get rid of the monarchy but just keep him

The Monarchy is an old relic of colonial Britain, which should be disbanded and wealth expropriated...

Bare in mind, the majority of the British tourism comes from the Monarchy. Thus, bringing more money into the London area in particular.

I can't accept that the majority of British tourism comes from the monarchy. I'd like to see some statistics to back that up....

Okay...I don't know if it's actually true.

But, if you think about it, what would there be for people to visit in London if there was no monarchy?

As I said before - the palaces. You could open them up all year round. France and Russia still maintain healthy tourist levels to their royal palaces despite having long since dispatched with their monarchies. And plenty else to see besides that - Houses of Parliament, Westminster Abbey, St Paul's Cathedral, St James' Park with the pelicans, London Zoo, the London Eye, Legoland, the science museam, natural history museum, planetarium, Madam Tussauds, Embankment, Brick Lane, China Town and lots more. And that's just London. There's a hell of a lot to see in Britain, so much that I could never believe that the royal family even comes close to bringing in the majority of the tourist revenue....

Heh, well i can't argue with that. That Friends episode where they all came over here perfectly illustrated all the best bits of the UK. :) Can't believe Joey never got to shag the Queen though.

Talk to a few Americans. Or Europeans for that matter. I have plenty of foreign friends to back up the popularity of the monarchy, even if i can't provide statistics. But is it really so hard to believe..?

Although I am nbot a Brit I am a firm supporter of and believer in the need for a monarchy to remain in England. I think I'm just a real Anglophile and traditionalist, really!

I would also have thought the existence of the monarchy would attract tourists!! Definitely!

I don't doubt that they do bring in tourist revenue, I just find it highly imbrobable that they bring in the majority of tourist revenue single handedly....

Would you have wanted South Africa to remain British then?

Ah, fair enough. I didn't really mean to suggest that anyway, not with any kind of accuracy anyway. But i'm sure they're one of the biggest draws to the country, i think you are underestimating their appeal.

I do believe that's what's known as a loaded question Pheonix. That's hardly fair now, is it?

It's true it was a loaded question, but it doesn't matter how I feel about the terms of it or the answer. I wanted to see the extent and universal applicability she would take her traditionalism and Anglophility to. Also, if she, as a South African, wants the British to have a monarchy because she's a traditionalist, but wouldn't want to have that monarchy to remain the head of state of her country too, then that might seem slightly inconsistent....

The Monarchy by their existence get reported in the world press, as indicated by Molls, that is how they create tourism to britain.
It is a more positive image than most reported news (war/death), basicly advertising the place, must be worth a few quid.
