A good thread is something fairly broad that grabs the interest of not just quite a few people, but grabs the interest of multiple points of view.

To me a good thread is one that lasts for a 50-100 posts and has maybe 10 or more people that participated in the thread. The more people the merrier. More people > more replies.

good thread: fighting, insults, boobs. to a lesser extent, good wit or interesting subject matter.

bad thread: more than 30 replies, ass-kissing, unnecessarily long uninteresting posts, excessive real life name dropping, detailed listing of past, present, or future meals, the word "sheeple," somebody making the same post as me after i made mine and for some reason being credited by every subsequent poster for making a great point that nobody thought of before, goatse.

if it ends with a smartass comment by a mod, followed by thread closure, it was almost definitely a good thread.

I hate the ones that everyone posts with similar reply.. like "yeah I do" "no I don't" "I have no feelings on the subject"

I like the ones that are different, like TCF's "You very first" thread... I thought that was a good one, and I was interested to hear people's replies/new questions. except some people ruined it towards the end.

I pretty much like when people post news that's going on in their area.. as long as it's not something completely dumb that I don't give a shit about.... like some air craft or anything boring of that nature.

I agree with all of these.

Also, I kind of think it's gotta be something that at least a few people are interested in. Like you know when people start talking about their favourite movie and someone else hears and they go on and on and on because they like that movie? Or like a band? Or some belief?

Like that. It's cool when people are passionate about it.

Not just something like "how many mousetraps are in your house" (off the top of my head).

One that contains postsfrom a number of posters from differing backgrounds with differing views on the topic in question.

One that moves reasonably quickly over the first hour and then slows down but still receives a couple of posts a day over an extended period.

One that is not about TV, food, somebody's personal gripe/love for another forumer.

One that makes me laugh, rather than giggle.

    One that makes me angry.

One thatn makes me want to post out of something other than boredom/excessive internet time.

good debate, sexy, fun people, fun posts, quotable things.

the bad; unquantifiable shit, opinions that cannot be supported by fact, or are supported by VERY incomplete fact (as all fact is incomplete, but, come the fuck on, there is a point where it just gets stupid)

I LOVE threads that are debates based on opinions that cannot be supported by fact. My favorites in fact.

Because of the fact that people speak so much more passionately about their opinions than some random facts they read off a page. People KNOW facts. They BELIEVE in their opinions.

And they often resort to calling names towards then end because they get tired of you talking against what they believe in.

On a side note, I think this is a successful, interesting ("good") thread:

The ones that people open up in are always among my favorite as well. I like getting to see who other people are a bit.

    not real ones.

misleading "facts" economic data meant to look like statistics, lipstick on pigs, words from talking heads, yes.

but things like, gravity increases with mass, and the inverse square law, are absolutely true, are fact.

    are real facts.

Who believes or cares about facts anymore? Just pick the website or cable channel that tells you what you want to hear. Everybody is doing it.
