I would say the same about banjo kazooie. I mean if you are gonna have a cartoony world you might as well make it funny like gex. Or at least a little more interesting like ratchet and clank.

The style of Gex is too thin for me. I like thick lush colorful worlds like Rocket Robot on Wheels. I want to feel like I'm on an adventure rather than playing a glorified 2D platformer.

Ratchet and Clank is about weapons. I'm not. I'll play GoldenEye N64 sometimes, but that's about it. It's also particle crazy and in a semi realistic style. I like a more Modern art style. BTW, I cannot stand Post Modernism. At least we're losing interest in that. We seem to be moving back to Renaissance, which I find boring.

So anyway, what keeps people coming back to these new free roam adventures?

I love fallout. And I used to love d&d. I still like it a little. So for me it is a whole new story in a style similar to a game I love in a genre that I am a fan of. I love the idea of being able to collect most things you come across. The ability to be able to kill a store owner and loot him or let him live and have a trade partner. I love the story and how it can change with each new person you come across and what you say to them.

I can see not liking it but it baffles me that you can't see the appeal to someone else. I mean it's not like it's a rts game.

I love D&D. P&P RPG's are my VR. The worlds surround me. I love the acting. I love that everyone including the GM has to think creatively. I love the laughter in the room. I don't get that from my daughter's Skyrim. I get the VR part from Zork.

marketing may have something to do with it. i know what morrowind and skyrim are (even though morrowind wasn't marketed at all to my knowledge; i stumbled on it completely by accident. skyrim was advertised pretty heavily though, and with fairly accurate information). on the other hand, i've heard of banjo kazooie, but i had no idea that it was colorful, free roam, or a puzzle game. i actually kind of thought it was an old platformer comparable to crash bandicoot and whatnot.

i did some of that tonight too. i won i think 5 out of 6 games.

Doesn't both kind of games still have plenty of popularity? Just because the majority of gamers seems to love free roam sandbox games doesn't mean nobody is into puzzle games anymore. I don't like every free roam sandbox game of course, it is all about setting, story and how it is delivered/what you're supposed to do. Plenty of sandbox games feel repetitive already from the start. They all make you largely do the same things: fetch this for that guy and you get something, beat up this group so you get a new quest/mission to beat up the next enemies :p

With Skyrim, which was marketed pretty good indeed, I was already waiting for it to be released because of my past experience with the Elder scrolls series. And I for one was not disappointed. Lots of people complained about it though, not just about the leveling system but also about the setting (too germanic/scandinavian mythology based and not that unique world feel Morrowind had), but guess what: I love that setting. Trolls, giants, bears, woods, snowy mountains, dragons... dwarf ruins. what the hell is not to love (well for me anyway).

I appreciate a good game wether it is free roam or not.

I dislike games that are all about leveling and collecting stuff, like Diablo for instance. It can be part of a good game, then it can be great. If I get the feeling this is the only thing I am playing this game for I get bored easily. Something has to trigger the interest of course. A great story will do that a lot of the time.

kind of reminding me of borderlands, i love everything about it...except every mission is pretty much the same and the story isnt that big and moves slow. and its like literally a sandbox game.
i remember thinking oh this mission was fun...when i did the same thing for the last 200 missions.

The free roam games I play aren't repetitive. There are a variety of puzzles and skill challenges. Their popularity is gone. I've actually been told by a gamer group that I need to change the way I think, so I can like the new games being offered. That was one of the most bizarre consumer moments I've witnessed.

There aren't a lot of games that fit my criteria. Banjo Kazooie, Banjo Tooie, Rocket Robot on Wheels, and Donkey Kong 64 are the best. Toy Story 2, Starshot, and Duck Dodgers are alright, but they don't seem to have the same effort put into them. Learning about the making of Banjo Kazooie is like listening to Floyd and crew talk about creating Dark Side of the Moon.

Maybe it is decreasing, because there are more and different kinds of games to get busy with. But it is not gone. I hear enough people having an interest in the kind of puzzle games you talk about here.

I wish I could get a lead on something I've overlooked.

I give honorable mention to Epic Mickey. It's not that fun, but at least it tried to bring a genre back. The best thing about it is that Disney used the game to acknowledge it was broken. If it weren't for Pixar, Marvel, and Star Wars, my family wouldn't care about Disney.

Rise of the Tomb Raider has some puzzles but it's lots of climbing and jumping, shooting bad guys and such. It's a pretty good game I guess. You do "level" your character I suppose, but you're using skill points to access a previously unlearned ability, like attacking from above by pressing Y or something like that which otherwise would be unavailable. It isn't hard to acquire skills and the gameplay is pretty fun, though I am only playing it on "easy". I don't like to try at games on the "medium" or "difficult" settings.

I always play on 'normal' difficulty at first and very rarely change that difficulty setting the first playthrough.

I would be seriously pissed off if they cancel Rise of... for the ps4. That's my kind of game, I loved the one that came before, the reboot of the Tombraider game franchise. I don't really wanna play it on the 360 (only option for me, except maybe if I would play it at somebody elses house who has an xbox one)

Thank you for making a suggestion. However, I should have clarified that I only play GoldenEye for the PVP. I have a Tomb Raider bundle. I got it for my daughter. However, I can't get her to play anything but Skyrim and some bizarre Japanese games.

Different strokes for different folks :)

I understand her love for Skyrim completely, but do not get most japanese games myself either.

I just finished 8 ball training on my real table. I'm doing pretty well this week. I got 3/3 at league night on Wednesday and I have trials this weekend again. :) a bit later I'll go to the pub for birthday drinks, knock the old fellas around the table a bit.

Haven't played pool at the bar in a while. I think if I feel like going out when I get home I am going to.

I've played a lot of billiards in my life. Some games got weird, and those weren't in bars, and bars are weird.

I used to run an arcade for a guy. I could drop the balls without paying by working my hand into the table and pulling the lever.
