Most teachers strongly advice against lying down for meditation. This is partly because there is a strong tendency to fall asleep. The other reason is the flow of energy through the chakras is smoother and faster if the back, neck and head are straight and vertically aligned. It is possible to do it lying down but that is only a worstcase scenario whe no other asana works.

It is also used at the end of long yoga workouts as a relaxing meditation, but for true meditation to reach the transcendental state, it is not recommended, except as a last resort for the infirm.

I guess it depends on the individual. I cannot fall asleep lying on my back, only on my side. So it's my favored position to meditate in before I go asleep. I am no expert in chakra or yoga. But within a few weeks of meditating lying on my back most of my energy blocks opened. As long as you can stay awake it has posed no problems for me. Whereas with a sitting posture on most surfaces I run into trouble. I am tall and my legs usually go numb and I lose all feeling in them after 40 mins. Which never seems healthy.

still no one is telling me HOW to meditate while lying down just that they advise against it and such please i would love to start meditating and this is the only way i can, are you allowed to lean up against something if you meditate sitting up? if so i might be able to try that way but those are the only two options i see for myself

You're allowed to use a wall or a chair back to support your spine while sitting up, but it must be kept straight.

As for HOW to meditate, it is not in any way different from sitting meditation. Perhaps you should do a little more serious study of what meditation is all about in theory before you begin. And I don't mean going to another web site.

sitting on your bum with your back straight stimulates pressure points at the base of your spine.

when was meditating and laying down, i was listening to really soft, slow music [mostly stuff like coldplay and la rocca,etc.]......although i felt my whole body begin to start tingling, it was weird:eek:i still hung around in that tingly state for a while but noffin' happened

    either way it was fun!!!
    good luck to you:cool:
