I think it is possible that a past civilization may have done so. It is not impossible.

The Maya peoples survived the Classic period collapse and the arrival of the Spanish conquistadores and the subsequent Spanish colonisation of the Americas. Today, the Maya and their descendants form sizable populations throughout the Maya area and maintain a distinctive set of traditions and beliefs that are the result of the merger of pre-Columbian and post-Conquest ideas and cultures. Millions of people speak Mayan languages today.

What was that you were saying?

We'll just have to wait until paleontologists find a Pepsi can embedded in a Precambrian rock.

Yeah I have heard of past civilizations being advanced for there time. I could see how they could obliterate themselves, With all the sickness, war, natural disasters, more war.

I don't think any civilisation has been as advanced further than we are today. It's relative. It is pretty amazing how far we have advanced in the last 150 years, though. How'd that happen?

Define advanced, there are monolithic stones so big only a few cranes in the world today could move them.

average life expectancy of above 40 would be where i'd start.

in fact, i'd probably say that NOT using slave labour to pointlessly push gigantic stones hundreds of miles could be seen as a pretty good indicator of our relative advancement as well...

which stones and slaves are you referring to???

and your life expectancy guide line rules out anytime before 14/1500's.

    yes, i suppose it does.

look, i'm all for cultural relativism, but accepting the subjectivity of my claim for our society's advancement. i would personally say that the factor by which i would be most inclined to measure advancement would be average standard, and length, of life. which i accept does cut off a great deal of world history.

i'm not claiming an objective measure. but it is the one which i would choose.
