I've always loved the initial post in this thread.

What's the point in doing that?

    :D

What's the point, in doing that?

To me it seemed at best a little bit facetious and in the worst case completely clueless.

Not that it can be worthwile or interesting to define the purpose(s) behind things, also when they seem a bit obvious.

The other day I was in doctors waiting. And I was banging away on my phone. I didn't notice that a lady was trying to get in the door with her pram. Like I heard the commotion but didn't bother to look. Anyway I felt this cold breeze and I glanced up with a shitty face to see who's keeping the door open lol and she must glares at me for not helping. And I like sit there thinking whoops shit that was awkward... No. No. It's not my fault they had to have a kid!

Because it feels good to help people does'nt it? I've done quite a few kind things to help people throughout my life.Infact I was reminded the other day,a person who reconnected with me,who I went to primary school with (I'm now 55,so a long time ago!)told me,I had helped her,at school as she was getting bullied.I honestly dont remember doing that, but I guess for most of my life,I've considered myself to be a kind person, looking after the underdog so to speak.
I guess its a mutual thing, you help someone, you both feel good right? Its also about putting yourself in the other person's shoes.Everyone needs help sometimes. The funny thing is though, although I like helping people,I don't like people helping me!lol I'm fiercely independant, and will only accept help if there is no choice but to do so.

No its about us!!Meaning me and the person/persons Ive helped. We both feel good!Ok even if it was all "about me"surely its better to feel good helping someone, than not helping??If you're talking about ego's,I dont usually tell other people in person anyway that I've done such and such today to help whoever.I tend to keep that info to myself.

I think the desire to help others is based on empathy and reciprocal altruism hardwired into the brains of most of us by evolution. There are exceptions: psychopaths, sociopaths, and various forms of autism, such as Asperger's Syndrome. If you're having difficulty understanding why people feel this desire, possibly you fall into one or another of those categories.
