In answer to the title of this thread...maybe it is because they see America as such a super power making decisions that affect them...and who likes that?

but I am not smacking America...so do not misinterpret me.

I do think that America can do alot better than it does, though.

  2. Sometimes when you really love a place you want it to be the best it can be, so you get frustrated, and people can misinterpret this frustration with hate. Keep that in mind, too, that when someone says they hate America, what they are really saying is that they love America.

In terms of culture, iconic cities and landscape, I think it's pretty great-- except for all of the lowbrow elements.

In terms of education and general knowledgeability of its citizens, I'd say it ranges from decent to abysmal... the differences are more extreme than other places.

In terms of quality of life, it's probably somewhere in the middle... but it's probably among the worst places to live if you look only at western liberal democracies. That is, unless you're very rich.

In terms of what it is doing to the rest of the world, it is absolutely horrific.

For me, the Iraq war was a game changer. I think for a lot of people, that unjustified invasion made us start seeing the US as an evil empire that had become little if any better than Russia had been for decades. Bullies and thugs. I'm talking about the government, not the people.

Our treatment of minorities used to be extremely embarrassing and inexcusable, but a lot of significant improvements had been made by the time I was old enough to understand what was going on.

Probably boils down to Americans hating Amerika and Amerikans hating America. I've not experienced people in foreign countries expressing hatred of Americans over the 50 years I've travelled, lived, or fought outside of the U.S.A., but have often been told of hate not only of American, but other countries governments for valid reasons which I agree with.
If I were to make a short list of the 10 worst things about America, not that I find America to be a horrible place, my list would be, in no particular order, as follows:
    1. government taxes
    2. government spending
    3. government debt
    4. government over regulation
    5. government deficit budgeting
    6. government agencies
    7. government waste
    8. government cronyism
    9. government arrogance
    10. government ineptitude
Although the list is incomplete, for the most part eliminating government involvement in 'most' areas of life results in very few problems which cannot be resolved satisfactorily between those who have differences, including differences which they and a large majority may agree should be made a responsibility of government.

I just find America boring sometimes because of its corporate culture. There is a sameness to everything, no matter where you go in the country. Of course the natural American landscape is very diverse, and we're such a melting pot you can find little pockets of culture from all over the world, large American cities have a lot to offer and the countryside is beautiful as long as people can keep their trash in their cars, but in between the country and the city its just Wal Mart, Target, Pet Smart, some annoying yogurt place, Mcdonalds, Burger King, you get the idea. You can go anywhere in this country and find the same box stores and crappy restaurants.

I think that's the only problem that is truly unique to America (well, since those are all multi national corporations other countries have to deal with this too but we all know where it originated), but I do really hate how America refuses to join the first world in some aspects - paid maternity leave, single payer health care, etc. We're one of, or often the only first world country (and sometimes one of the only countries period!) that doesn't offer social programs like this, and this all goes back to the stereotype of the self centered American - social programs dont get any support here because most people don't recognize that these programs actually do work in other countries.

That depends onwho you are talking to and listening to. It is a trait that is world wide in human nature....contemplating one own's navel.....Ofcourse, some people are more self centered than others......the rest of the world is not any better, believe me.

I know you have to be joking, because you're a hardcore NASCAR fan. You know more about it than I do, and I live in the middle of the area where they all have their shops.

I have to give you the black flag penalty for that. You have to do a pit road drive-through. ;)

Sometimes NASCAR drivers will do local TV commercials here, and they're always funny. Such as, it took the guys forever to shop for groceries because every time they needed to turn their shopping carts to the right, they had to make three left turns. :D They didn't know how to turn right.
