bonsai is the artform of creating trees that are small in size but appear to be old and mature. this takes many years to accomplish. dogwood is the species of tree used to create the bonsai. bonsai trees can be made of nearly any species of hardwood tree. :xmastree:
gone find me a dogwood...i saw these pretty red leafed trees on campus. i dunno what they are thoough. any tips for finding good uns, np?
red leafed? not sure. lots of trees have red leaves this time of the year. lets see...tips...you are looking to dig up something that will 1. survive the digging and subsequent potting, 2. be small enough to fit in a 5 or 10 gallon pot, and 3. have some sort of aesthetic value. check out www.bonsai4me.com because it has info for beginners and www.walter-pall.de www.artofbonsai.org/galleries/lenz.php for aesthetics and some people use the arborday.org website for tree identification, but i don't think it's very efficient. your campus will have local/native tree identification books in the reference section. :xmastree: one of my favorites by Nick Lenz:

when I was in Vietnam I got to see a fucking sweet bonsai display/competition in one of the parks there... probably a hundred or so. beautiful. I have photos somewhere at home.
omg np, i want to the aboretum last night and there are so many good specimen. i'm assuming i'm looking for saplings right? i'm thinking of doing a contorted european hazel...
i would also try redbud. they grow rampant in your area, don't they? not so good for displaying in the summer, but they have a beautiful winter silhouette. from what i've read, the hazel could work. and yes, you could look for a sapling on your first dig. however, if you are confident in your abilities in horticulture (AKA keeping plants alive long enough to survive re-potting) then you could potentially find a 1-2 year old plant (or even older) with a base circumference of 2-4 inches. this would save a lot of time and work on the finished tree. ill send you some pics in a few months when i go back to my parent's farm and have a camera.
I won't be home til sometime in May, but I will post some if you remind me next month. I'll probably forget.
well my one redeming quality is that i have been told i could grow rocks if you need that done, need some help? drop me a pm and i might be able to help you out!
