slackware runs on less than 4mb of ram. of coarse, the kernel could be compiled to run on a 386. no-one uses a 386 though.

Depending on how much of 'kde' you compiled, six hours is pretty good. On Gentoo on my dual ultrasparc 3 1.015 GHz's it took about 18 hours or so, but gentoo bundles a lot of stuff when you emerge kde.

1.5 GB ram pent 2.0 overclocked @ 2.3 Ghz. 18 hours is a long time. i still want an ultrasparc though. i lke the archintecture.

i use "top" in the terminal most of the time.

here are some screen shots of my Fedora Core 6 system with Beryl.

I have to admit to using top alot too... have you tried htop? that's good too. I like your screenys btw :) I tinkered with xgl early last year but got pissed off with it 'cos it was unstable... as soon as beryl and Xorg7 is stable (time permitting) I'll try again :)

What do you like about the architecture?

18 hours is long for straight kde, but I think it's pretty fast considering all the stuff it came with.

Mac OSX is indeed powerful and a very good OS. my only real problem with it is i like complete control over my OS. and i like source code. and some other things but all in all...

OSX is BSD with a skin and limitations.

=) I am a Gentoo guy =) but I am new to linux so...it is hard.

I put the live cd in, did screen with someone, got a kernel and did all screen things with him for about 4-6 months(I lost track) and...well I learned a shit ton! but now I am stuck with a gui but a crappy video driver(I think) and no sound. =/ I will figure it out one day =)

gentoo is amazing but extremely difficult(for me anyways) but worth it for people who want to know how their computer works...it's like stick shift for linux.

if you're using a NVidia card, try "emerge nvidia-drivers nvidia-glx". DON'T use "nv-drivers" they suck balls.
You may also want to edit /etc/xorg.conf to point to the new drivers: find "nv" and change to "NVidia".
