There's nothing to stop someone here from building an msn community or yahoo group just for their chatroom. Then people can just log in using their .NET passport or yahoo sign in name.

I think that there are a number of other free chatrooms out there too but that would create problems with people having to register for a new site

i dont mind doing that, but it would be cool if we could maybe make a list of everyone who is up for this idea so it looks like everyone wants it, rather than just a few of us.

there has been some discusion recently in the uk forums about the possibility of a chatroom.

is there any way that a chatroom could be set up where we have a list on our main page of who is in it, and then we can access it from the main uk forum.

there are quite a few regular uk forumers who would really like this.

Yeah I agree, we really do need a chatroom. Hippy chat is very unreliable and doesn't work that well at all. We should have a chat system incorporated into the forums themselves....

i dont really know how these things work, so i could just be talking useless bollox, but would it work if one person from the uk forum volunteered to run the chatrooms and do to them whatever it is that skip doesnt have the time to do?

just a thought anyway.......

The software that this forum uses (vbuletin) has an option to add a forum that integrates with the IRC network ... However this set up costs about £50 to licence thorugh a company called jpilot and takes a few hours work to configure properly, it would also need an administrator to have access to the HTML code which is all stored in the database (I know this as I set it up on a site that I built once)

Another problem with using IRC is that if you have an easy username like mine it will already be taken by someone else on the IRC network

It isn't really possible to add a link to an outside chatroom as it would need to extract the member names from the hipforums database or people would need to join again which could cause problems with username conflicts.

 

so theres not really anyway it could happen then?

im useless with computers and dont really have a huge understanding of all the things you just said. i guess i will have to leave it to someone who does know how they work to figure it out coz im all out of ideas now.
