When electricity was first introduced in the UK, people did stupid things like that, They also tried to blow them out.
Perhaps the funniest was people using sticky tape, Plasticine and rolled op bits of paper to block the holes in sockets to prevent the electricity from escaping.
Sparks literally flew when they tried to fish them out with a metal skewer.

Early supplies were DC and it was electrocuting so many people and causing fires that people were going back to gas lighting.

 

Will you draw me a version of diodes working as full and half wave rectifiers.
