I remember when we got health cover once but we weren't married the lady said the same thing you did she says "how long have you been together, hmm I see, well, you're basically married anyway"

 

Heres the part I dont get, why dont you all go overseas for medical stuff. You mentioned somewhere else you pay $12k a year for health insurance. Which made my eyes water

Emergencies you dont have much choice. But everything else.....

Even Aerianne paying $500 for glasses is a little WTF? Bet you the exact same thing in Cuba would have cost under $100, and how much is a flight to Cuba? Go for the weekend, stay at a cheap hotel near the beach, try not to get murdered. With the difference, holiday pays for itself.

Australia is relatively cheap, but Thailand is cheaper. I get my dental done in Thailand, big business over there, lots of middle eastern types and chinese especially going over there for medical Tourism

Or even just order glasses online, you only need the prescription, then buy the glasses cheaper from another country

I've been to Mexico four times this year and lived in Medellin and Bogata Colombia.
Obviously much higher murder rates in those countries, but very regionalized. Yucatan has a murder rate half the US.

While I never felt in danger from people in Latin America, the traffic scares the hell out of me.

 

Yeah I think some people do go overseas. I know of someone who went to Mexico for a hip replacement and someone else who went there for major dental work. But there are some circumstances where that isnt really feasible. It works for surgeries you plan ahead of time, but it wouldnt work for emergencies like you said or something like cancer which would require continuous treatment for an undetermined amount of time
Also I dont pay 12k a year, I think I was talking about how much it would be if I did have a spouse on my plan. My plan is more like $200 a month now with a 6k deductible that has to be paid before insurance will pay anything. Which is still a lot more than a trip to Mexico

 

I dont know, If I get cancer, Thailand would be the first place I'd go. Not like you can work anyway with chemo

Think cancer is a prime example of a good time to think about medical Tourism

Things like that, most of what you are really paying for is the cost of their liability insurance, their rent and of course salary. You are not going to get twice the experience with a doctor on twice the salary with ailments that have been researched left, right and centre
