yeah, you should never assume. "I suspect most who've used wax here would tell us they wish they did a bit more research first." i did about a years worth of 'research', it was only until i found this forum late last year that i realised the error of my ways.. i dont think it woulda been possible for me to do more research =]
Amybird, do you not agree with the rest of my post? I am curious. Also, I can see why LiquidSoul isn't here anymore. This place has drastically changed from a year ago.
we've talked about this in another post as well.... the information available for better methods for making dreads is MUCH easier to find now.... when i got my first set of dreads, i researched for MONTHES before doing it, but i didn't find much contrary to the KB and HQ wax method, blah blah blah, etc, etc.... the point is, it's difficult to find GOOD sources of info on making dreads in the first place. so, using wax or not using wax has nothing to do with the any impulse or lack there of decisions, when it is strictly a matter of the difficulty of finding info to the contrary. when i made my first dreads i knew NOTHING about it other than what i found on the internet... and i didn't know ANYONE to give me any info either.... had nothing to do with wanting insta-dreads or whatever..... just lack of information. but, as we've discussed before, it IS getting easier to find more information.... i didn't find dreadlocktruth.com until just recently, which has LOADS of excellent information regarding why NOT to use wax, and i'm into my 4th set of dreads! if i could have found that years ago, i wouldn't have used the wax at all! LOL
i must quote this as well, because, i used wax to begin my dreads ... all 4 sets, and i don't regret it at all either.... HOWEVER, i don't use wax anymore, and i'm finding these dreads are turning out MUCH better.... so, it's a love hate relationship thing for sure. wax serves it's purpose.... i actually know one girl who has had dreads for like, 7 years and counting, and she STILL uses wax from time to time, and LIKES it, so it's all a matter of what you prefer, etc etc.... if i had known i didn't HAVE to use wax the first 3 times around, i wouldn't have.... but i'm don't regret using it the first day with this set either, because it cut down the frizz.... i work in an office, i can't show up for work looking like a bush whacker as much as, to tell you the truth, i am one LOL!
heads you live, about how far back are you talking, here? I've found that when starting something like this it is helpful to check out message boards. "Dreadlocks forum" was one keyword I used back before I started. This wasn't the only place I found with an anti-wax mindset either, far from it! Though i guess if you diligently search for information for months/years and still look to DHHQ and KB, it cannot be helped. Perhaps it was for you to use wax. Like you said, as part of the experience. *trying to grasp this concept.
when i started my first set of dreads (2005 i think), i knew NOTHING about message boards, blogs, or forums - i grew up without a computer, i barely knew how to turn one on - google + dreadlocks = knottyboy, hahaha! to give me any other info than what i found on knotty boy.... and, then, of course, there was that small part of me that wanted to support knotty boy because they're canadian - i'm canadian, etc etc.... i never really LIKED using the wax, but i thought i HAD to.... so i continued.... and combed out 3 sets of dreads! LOL i check out KB seldomly now to look at the pics, but that's pretty much it.... not very impressed anymore... the whole, support local businesses, thing has completely lost all of its glamour.
*sigh* Initially I took issue with your inferrance about whims, then with your "assumed" correlation between products and whimsy, followed by your further equation of unfortunate research with whimsy, all of which were poor judgements. However, if they are just your assumptions rather than your opinions, maybe you don't even agree with your own words. Blah. Tone of voice is absent from this medium so language, tone, inferrance etc carry a greater weight and ought to be considered. How has this place changed? You can't just assume what you want, shrug off responsibility for your words and imply it's everyone else's fault? If so, good. My concise answer to the original post may have been misleading in some respects; however, a public forum is not the place for my life story. Am I being particularly arsey tonight? If so, sorry. *shrug* I'm sure my other self will return soon.
I realized I wanted dreads after being around people who have em on these forums. Now i'm just waitin' for my hair to grow out enough to get started on em.
Personally I'd have to say dready curiosity man. I'm always lookin' for cool artistic forms of dress an' such. To me dreads are a good way of artistic expression.
I think the hardest thing'll be figurin' out how to actually get my hair the way I want it for when I actually get ready to make my dreads. its so curley and wavey and it grows in opposing directions on like 3 sides of my head lol. It does look real cute long tho.
when i started both my sets it was before having the net..before ever hearring of the net 1st set of dreads were made when a comodore 64 was concidered a piwerful home computer. there was no source of info on dreads availible, but a old rasta dude that came to a soup kitchen i volunteered at. i asked him, how do you get your hair like that, he said, just throw away your comb it happens naturaly. that was enough info almost it was enough info to dread absolutely. and i dreaded like crazy but congo'd outta control. 2nd set.. computers advanced slightly, 286's and 486's were tghe advancesd computers.. internet connectivity was availible at blazing 14.4 or even 36.6 modem speeds. u could begin loading a page, go cook and eat dinner and still have a wait for it to finnish loading. so, i still had only the words of that rasta to go by, and the advice of another rasta women i met at the co-op she said she loved "klunkers" (the word she used for dreadies whos dreadss congod like crazy) but if i wanted to avoid that just seperate the dreads now and then. ok, so, that seemed simple enough.. do nothing to dread.. pull dreads apart to avoid overdreading. the research it took was talking to 2 people st the time pretty muchy only rastas were thye ones yad see with dreads. today the internets the 1st source of info for anything. and alotta sources are not very ethical. if you search for online dating for instance adult freindfinder dominatyes the top 100 spots and we all know they are scummy when it comes to using extreme scam practices and tricks to lure u in the same can be said for kb and dhhq they flood the web with lies and misleading pages just to draw yu in so the 1st source of iinfo becomes the most unreliable. this sprewads like a plague, so when ya see a buncha kids on the street with dreads and ask em, they automaticly reffer ya to the misleading sites. so even ppl whove dreaded for up to 7 years or so can mislead you since they were mislead themselves. but going to the source..a rasta over 60 whos dreaded 30+ years or more naturaly then would be the best source of info. or perhaps smart searching would help.. insr=tead of searching for "how to make dreads" search for "how do dreadlocks happen" i havent tested that, but perhaps the very idea that dreads are made has currupted the way we look for info? so you search for methods for making dresads instead of info on how the process happens on its own? the idea that they need to be made leads directly to products to help u make them quicker and easier the dreadkit then becomes just another ronco kitchen gadget , except for youir hair. soon we will have hour long infomercials with johnydirty showing us all how quickly and easily the new dreadmaster 2000 creates dreads in seconds.. for only 5 paiments of 99.99 each..but wait, act fast and we'll throw in this huge gallon size tub of wax, for that rock hard dread feel in just 1 easy application a day but wait, thats not all, just for using your credit cardf we'll give you this free gift, the amazing new frizzmaster dread tidying maxchine, sijmply thread your dread through the hole, turn the crank and let the over 500 felting needles pound your frizz into submission leaving your dread entirely smooth and frizz free for at least 3 days.. but, now for a limmeted time only for an additionasl 24.95 a month we wiill thropw in our newest product the frizzmaster extender.. this is a clear teflon shelaq coating microbonded with celephane and adhesives that are appklied after usingt the frizzmaster , and it will bond to the dread causing a thin clear shiny coat that seals out dirt and seals in frizz so your dreads feel smooth hard and inflexible for weeks after using the frizzmaster. but wait, thats not all the 1st 40 callers will also receive our pastented dhhq dread removal kit, which includes at no extra cost, this blow torch for quickly melting away the frizzmaster extender coating, a diamond edged machette for quickly hacking through wax hardended dreads and this 1/2 gallon size tub of vitsamin e to repair all the dammage done. with all those special gifts who can resist? they'll be buying em up by the thousands i know i wewnt wrong somwhere in this post..lol have no idea how i ended up where i did
So if a musician has some big lovely locks to sling around while playing...is that not an outward expression!!! Thanks Amy ...Im so sick of this elitist BULLSHIT , some folks are just damn right rude about others decisions on here. I find if any reason that I do leave this forum it would be because of that.
Callie if you leave, that special corset I had made to stop my sides splitting every time you have a Callie moment and crack me up will be a total waste of money!
