If you're talking STRICT 50s r'n'r, you're right.....but the thread starter up here didn't specify THAT :cheers2:
You're only getting yer terminology jumbled up here.....I think we should go back to square 1 an define what the term ROCK 'N' ROLL is intended here :cheers2:
Yes lets ponder.... what is this Rock and/or Roll....... and therefore what is death signified by.... and to find that can we know what the life was????
R'n'R as explained on Wiki.....logically, if we take the meaning of this genre originally and literally, over half the things said on this thread are irrelevant!! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rock_and_roll
I think Marilyn Manson and Slipknot both have a typical metal sound. Of course there are lots of bands that can't be defined easily, especially lots of early heavy metal fit in the rock 'n roll terminology as well. Metal though has lots of subgenres and developments and a lot of them have as much in common with rock ('n roll) like rock 'n roll with pure blues. The music of those two bands are good examples in my opinion.
First things first folx! Can anyone define what tha heck ROCK & ROLL iz??? It seems like there are a lot of ROCK & ROLL HALL OF FAME'rs who are, and whose music is, still quite alive and well...
good point timewarp! wikipedia (how could I have overlooked this resource?) offers a good insight as to what R&R is all about. of COURSE it's not dead! Music is people. As long as a people live, so will their music...
I think what "Huey Lewis and the News" sang is true: They say the heart of rock and roll is still beating And from what I’ve seen I believe ‘em Now the old boy may be barely breathing But the heart of rock and roll is still beating But that having been said, I think that most bands now a days don’t play rock and roll. It maybe music but it’s just not rock and roll. I don’t think most bands now a days even know what rock and roll really means!
Most bands on the radio don't indeed. If you don't know what kinds of music is being made in the 'underground' (just mean the music that doesn't gets much radioattention) or like some people in this thread if you don't even know what rock 'n roll is, how can you claim it to be dead or barely breathing?
My op: rock 'n' roll is any music that is NOT wimpy as opposed to say some early forms of r'n'b or soul that DEGENERATED into that SUCKY thing called "disco music" in the late 70s...let me explain better: if any music died, it was certainly the original soul/r'n'b by legends like James Brown, etc. by the hands of those who thought of taking the funk out of soul...and what do you get? That WIMPY music called "disco music" aka YMCA crap!! Now that's death of music for ya. By FUNKY I mean those "bootie-shakin'" basslines that got deep under your skin and made you move....diiiig!! . Luckily, there are bands like Funkadelic and Outkast that put the FUNK back in! . Rob
If you wanna be updated on what's happening in underground-land, AVOID listening to the radio......go to Myspace or Facebook:cheers2::cheers2::hat:
There will still be rock as long as people keep playing rock music. If it's good rock music or not is just a matter of taste.
mmmhhh it's true that it's a partially a matter of taste... but your answer is too simple... and mostly "the simple answers" hide another part of the truth ...a sort of underground truth (uhm i understand if u can't follow me) It's clear that if you're born of the last rain you'll think that rock n roll still good and alive ...and that's quite true... but when you know (and i'm far to be the only one) deeply the rock n roll (in his wide sense) history and his wide record collections... you soon discover this "underground truth" it appears there... yes this truth is that those actual records are not as good as in other glorious adventurous (etc...) times... NB:mmmmhhh i just re-read my last words...and i think that it's quite pretentious to say that indirectly my point of vue (and i'm not the only one) is the real truth. Shit all is subjective... even rock critics are subjective... definitly rock still alive...yes as a fuckin' zombie hehe
Tsk, the so called rock 'n roll fans are acting more like zombies nowadays. They're listening to their wellknown favourite records from the 'golden days' and what is broadcasted on the commercial channels and claim rock has to be dead.
yes maybe...but i'm not like them who listened just few classic records of the past...has a lot of people listen to "cool" past music as Led Zep , Janis Joplin, the Doors, jimi hendrix (experience)...most of them are dead...and it's seems to be one of the main reason of the attraction of a part of the "naive" youth (call them lambs)... personally i'm a searcher... i collect more album who don't sell a lot of at the time... so i'm more in search of little lost treasure of the "golden era"... but it's clear that with myspace you can find easily 100 and even 1000 actual good bands around the world... i love actual bands... modernity and myspace gives you the illusion that there's more good stuff now... it's just the result of this new web revolution... more good bands don't mean better....there's 1000 shit bands as well... that's just not the same level for me...generally modern stuff touches me less deep in my soul...even when i listen to good modern music... but well to be honnest the music is difficult to catch (hehe yes it's not a material) and compare bands with other bands seems to be nearly impossible... it's enough now...i turn this overloaded page
