I remember them well, Janes dad made his money by owning a lorry and he had a device for cutting treads into them himself. It worked like a soldering iron and when he got down to the cords, he painted them black. Janes brother inlaw had an old bug and like yours it did not have a clutch. Matching gear speeds was such fun, as was estimating speeds to never catch the traffic lights on red.
After a few poor quality British cars, I have owned nothing except Audi, VW over the last 45 years. My A6 lasted 19 years and did 285,000 miles on its original clutch.
Our current TDI Golf did 76mpg on a recent journey, but the clutch was not so lucky since Jane started driving.;)
We bought a Polo last week for our daughter. She wanted something a bit more fancy, but once she saw the VW quality she was more than happy. It is a low mileage 2009 car, but having been well looked after it looks like new.

Our past shaped us all into the people who we are today. That is what makes me feel sad for many of the younger generation. Rather than worry about the latest fashion, Jane and I concentrated on giving our children a secure home and healthy home cooked food. It seems to have paid off.

i still have no reason to care who or who's relatives have money.
what i care is who is considerate, because those who are not, are risky business to not steer clear of.

Growing up I went to a one room country school in cheese country. There were no wealthy students but we still had fun....outdoors at recess all year. Then in high school, I encountered a number of students who came from a private jr high school/ elementary school run by the local State College. Many of them came from families with lots of money, frequently old money. Many but not all had this recognizable attitude of superiority, exclusiveness, and disdain for students with less. Others didn’t matter and they had no real interest people who didn’t share their background. 55 years later they still have that attitude. In the language handed down from German immigrants in that community, “they thought wonders who they were” or in modern language “their shit didn’t stink”.

Today I spend time with people who value others, their community, and believe there really is enough to go around...just needs to be shared.
