I think SoaringEagle went on an adventure with PedoBear.
SE had a few things to learn, from what I understand.

I have found it interesting that many dread website and forums seem to draw in an younger (yes, kettle, black, whatever) crowd that often is fundamentally different than the community we had initially. This is because no one group or race "owns" dreads: not blacks, not rastas, not hippies, not skateboarders, not goths.

However, I think some people are unaware of the hostility they can bring; this is very unfortunate, however, I believe they thrive on it.

I don't believe a closed membership community is the answer, after all I do not wish for one group to own dreads. However, I feel it would be ideal if we could politely overlook those we disagree with, and understand we don't all walk one path.

Yeah, I just don't understand the hostility.

I'm assuming a lot of people are ending up at this site because 1) they are searching for a dread forum and fail to notice it's a more thorough "hippie" forum, or 2) they are here because they are the hippies of the stoner persuasion and don't really understand that some of us are not exactly the same. I don't think the label hippie is really limited quite so. There are the ones who smoke pot and listen to pink floyd and wear tie dye; there are the ones who live on communes, or on homesteads and grow their food and use solar panels; there are those who follow the rainbow / tour trail and live as vagabonds; there are those are who are anarchists, activists or radicals; plus lots more.

I just feel like it's not such a positive place anymore which is sad because I believe we could cooperate as a community without the need to make fun of people or to ficticiously catagorize 20,000 or more people as pedophiles.

Mainly, I don't understand the statement about rainbow. It seems to be a huge generalization (obviously). What I do see quite a bit of though is people that will say "oh I know about Rainbow Gatherings, some of them trashed this beautiful place..." and go on to tell a story about how a group of "rainbow" squatted at a camp site and left a bunch of their shit and littered and tore it up or whatever. I then will ask them what gathering they are referring to, and they say they don't know, but the people called themselves rainbow. I could call myself a hamster, but it doesn't make me one.

True, it's not all rainbows and kisses at Rainbow, that is reality. HHB said it best, invite the world and the world shows up. There probably are child molesters there, I would not even begin to deny it. However, they are there because they are in the world and oh, hey, free food in the woods. That does not mean that Rainbow is an inherently unsafe place, or that you can not trust people. You can, overall, trust someone at Rainbow more than you can trust someone at the corner gas station, just use your freaking head about it. The only problem is that when you can so easily trust, you can easily be taken advantage of. Until we live in an ideal world, this is the closest we're going to have to utopia.

^ Although i have very little experience with anything related to the rainbow, id imagine thats just about it. As you said, if you invite everyone, everyone may come, including some assholes, but from what i understand id imagine there is alot better of a nice person to asshole ratio than in most places in our world today.

You know what, FUCK people talking shit and implying that soaring eagle is elitist, and whatever the fuck ive been reading in threads for the past month or so. You know what, maybe he is a little fucking elitist, but with good reason, since hes been growing dreads since before the goddamn internet, and as long as ive been alive, and he has every right to be proud of the fact he went natural and try to influence others to do the same. Because no matter way you look at it, yeah backcombing will give you somewhat better results in the first year, but if you REALLY want dreads and are comitted to it, 5 years down the line going natural is SO MUCH better.

You are not elitist enough for that, let SE fight his own battles... with those talons of fury.

BTW: SE has been posting in the HF since before the internet.

Actually, five years down the road most people can't tell if you backcombed or went natty. Time takes care of everything and is the big leveler.

I once did an experiment on a few dreads to see how crocheting loosy's at my roots would work. I really didn't care for how it worked and it was way too much effort so I never did it again - after a few months the dreads and time took care of the crocheted spots and now those spots just look like the rest of my lumps and bumps.

I feel bad for SE. I don't care for him but I don't think anybody deserves to get shit on when they're not provoking it directly.( like the thread where he said that the chick's girlfriend had to be gross to sleep with her or whatever - that deserves a toasting) Most of the people doing the poking and that have a problem with him have been around as long as he has and were a part of what made this community chill for many years - unfortunately when the schism happened a bucket load of cool folk felt betrayed personally by SE. What's odd is the people that had the most right to get butt hurt at SE are over it and don't care anymore...

I hate to keep bringing that situation back up but for those that are newer and think that the people ragging on SE are newer and are just being n00b asses are wrong. The post count may be low -doesn't mean they haven't been here for years. (Think this is my third account over the past few)

His dreads are great, sure. He's got 15 years of natural dreadlock experience, sure. But since his 15 years have been of the natural path it gives him no personal experience in which to judge or give advice on other methods that other people CHOOSE. Wax education is good and helpful - being elitist to other paths you don't understand or have experience with is not. Like the time he started bashing that chick and crocheting in a thread that some poor girl had put a good deal of time into making a really great tutorial on crocheting and turned it into a flame war...and by the end of it he still didn't get why what he said was rude and why she got upset.

We all have dreadlock hero's. Mine is Hummblebee. It's a shame but she used to be one of the best posters here (and in the craft forum - she's my sewing hero too) and she doesn't need to make anyone feel bad or gets insulting when she shares her knowledge.

I don't think SE does anything maliciously, he's just stuck in his own paradigm. And unfortunatley anyone who puts themselves out there that much will eventaully become a drama magnet and that's just how it goes. Doesn't make it right or wrong, it's just how things happen.

Heh, I have been posting here since I was 12 years old. Ten freaking years :O Its too bad I didn't start my dreads back then :p

The site has changed a lot, and lost some of it's appeal. I remain hopeful though.

BTW, I was Dakota Rain (12-14ish?), I was NerosNeptune (15-20ish), and now I'm Advaya.

I do not know what happened though, to be honest. I have this way of missing all the drama and then wondering what the hell happened when the dust clears.

Maybe he's angry because of people's lack of patience. I bet when SE's dreads were new back combing, Synth dreads, and dreadlock companies weren't around. Nowadays there are so many ways to get dreadlocks and the instant ways of getting dreads in my opinion are far more popular than the natural way. But this way, dreads can be as permanent as you want them and I just think he gets a lil angry that people don't really have dreads past 1 or 2 years. I think he wants people to know that they should be a lifelong commitment.

I have a lot to owe SE his posts have taught me just to go with the flow with my hair and to stop using wax. Sure, at the moment I really do not like my front dreads but I'd never brush em out. I too don't think he deserves the crap he gets

I dont like the way my thread has blown out of proportion... i was only a little worried for a fellow dread head, because I hadnt seen him on the forum for a while....

Maybe all we need is a bit more respect, and for everyone without exception to just do something simple before they post.... and that is think...
