my left ear is gay and is totally into my right ear, but she's totally straight and won't have anything to do with lefty. and i have to hear about it all.
OK, you can't see it in my sig pic, but I have my left ear pierced. Did it in 1973 (with a sewing needle and alcohol dipped thread). I was living with a guy at the time, but just saw all the single ears pierced being left. I thought it was some kind of pirate tradition. So the bigger question, were pirates gay? IDK. That was back in the 'signal' days, U know with hankies and white socks and whatever. Maybe I was trying to pass for straight. Yeah, so no one in New Orleans would know that Jim and I were gay - just freeky "roommates."
Ok Ok, for the sake of being Devil's advocate, and mentioning first that I had both ears pierced... haha and realizing that this particular display as far of which ear doesnt really seem to hold up anymore, it did at one point (I had friends in college that were aware of the left vs right issue and would wear the earring as an outward sign of their sexuality) If a particular way of presenting yourself draws attention from a particular group of individuals that you might not want attention from, wouldn't you want to know?? Lets say I grabbed a patch in a store that looked cool because it reminded me of the Indian symbol for peace, like this: but it actually looked like this: and you didn't know that there was a difference... wouldn't you want to know ahead of time? As far as I can tell the kid didn't want to know because he hates homosexuals but because he does not want to misrepresent himself. I don't see anyone white shoelaces in their doc martens and suspenders and shaved head without someone thinking something in particular about that person... Jesus... I'm sorry about all the nazi references, I guess it was just the easiest group to latch onto for examples sake... How about this... if you walk around wearing a fireman's coat and carrying an axe, won't people come up to you and ask you for help putting out fires? And if you don't know how to put out fires because you aren't a fireman, should you be wearing a fireman's suit? Yes do what YOU want and wear what YOU want but sometimes having a bit of knowledge helps you know that maybe you shouldn't wear a blue outfit when your visiting an area that has blood gang members in it...
And btw.. when I was in school it had nothing to do with being gay... I heard about that later on.... all I knew in school was that "right is wrong" when you went to get your ear pierced. But then I got them both done...
Oooh check this out... wiki.... In various Western cultures, piercing the left vs. the right ear alone has sometimes been popularly perceived to be associated with a particular sexual orientation (or with an active vs. passive role in a homosexual relationship) [Google search]. However, due to the lack of uniformity, such generalizations are essentially meaningless.
It's the right side, any piercing on the right side is generally known as the "gay side". But it is really just such a trivial matter.
Shale, did you ever hear of sides being signals for top/bottom? and what did a tie dyed bandanna mean, I wonder. I want to tease my sweetie. But I also like to be correct. dm, who was a little naive in those days.
