yeah? People really eat Kangaroo or is he just pulling our legs?

    Australians are savages.

I have been putting my husband through school living off of my meagre income for the past 2 years after I switched careers (before we were fine when I made a healthy salary)

It has fuckin sucked. You sit and worry if you'll have enough to make ends meet and that's what sucks... the worry of getting to the point where people are actually hungry, and have no place to go. Paying bills that need to be paid but then in turn suffering in other areas. Living off bannock and tea..... eating too much rice and pork butt steaks on the barbque. Ugh. But we are fortunate we have food to eat and our health and all that.

I'd rather be poor than rich....

  6. I'm actually dead sure and a little upset that people have insulted my intelligence and judgement so much in this thread.....I am currently on the list of "unemployed" eligible to receieve benefits, but I choose to work for my money because I feel better for it. Anyway, whatever one can receive from welfare payments in Australia is enough for excellent food, a decent place and transport with a lot of money left over. Most things are cheap to buy if you're not materialistic. If you're eanring wlefare permanently you're even better off. The "disabled" (ie manic depressents etc) are given large houses, while my grandmother who has been with the housing trust for 45 years has a one bedroom unit.

Trust me, the poverty line in Australia is classed at $300AU a week per person. I'm on $150-$200, Go figure.

Anyway...we have medicare which is health care almost entirely free for the poor and decent basic private health insurance with ambulance, dentist and all those nice things is $15 a week for me, which is less than one hour's work.

    AND:

Kangaroo is delicious and is something in between beef and lamb, but contains very little fat, so it is healthy, and its good for the environment too, because kangaroos are overpopulated.

Oh sorry, i've gone all righteous, but my intentions are good this time, really, live simply whenever you can, its my experience that i need far less then i ever thought i did

I wouldn't mind being poor if I were single. I have always been a rambler.

But, now that I have two mouths to feed, it's not very fun even on the pretty good earnings I do make.

  10. Everybody move to Australia.....

or not....what goes up must come down and looking at history recession is inevitable.

    How I love capitalism.

Being poor in a socialist country may not be that bad... til it hit a recession and governments cut back. Being broke is one thing, facing possible homelessness is another.

I grew up poor, don't remember how much bothered I was by it but it did teach me to be resourceful and to be a miser. They had the most delicious honey buns at the high-school I went and all the kids would buy them except me. For a long time I resisted treating myself to the little things like honey buns, pop, CD's (I was pirating long b4 I had a PC), etc. Partly as a result of that I never the weight issues that plagued so many ppl :).

When I started working after school I would take any extra shifts passed my way and I seemed to have more money than my coworkers, but I didn't let them know that ;), I always told ppl I had no money to join them on outings.

Then I went out with men who were real spenders and some of that rubbed off on me. Then I got a real job and couldn't call myself poor, got seduced by fine dining and fine chocolates and now I'm no longer a miser. My income is reduced now but my spending habits are slow to change.

Looking back on it I think I enjoyed being a miser and living simply. But I have been poor to the point where I didn't know if I could make rent and that is no fun.

One very positive thing I gotta say about growing up poor is you appreciate things that others take for granted. So that pepsi is even more delicious cos it's novelty hasn't worn off :).

i love being broke! I don't have to worry about what to buy because i already know i can't afford it.

For the first time I feel free. "Freedom's just another word for nothing left to lose" Kris Kirstoferson
    Now i know why.

If you have a fucking brand new lexus in your driveway you can't be free, because you have to make payments on the piece of shit. If you buy stuff on credit cards you get bills, etc. I don't want it. I always have been a bit of a jew with money though, i am very frugal.

I really just don't need anything. There is nothing I want, and i truly feel that way. This moment is all I have. How Buddhist am i? lol

that's how i feel i will never have car payments again when i finish my loan next year. i have one credit card i pay off every month. i got so sick of being tied down by things...no more excess. i only fill two closets in the house now (down from five last year) and i havent bought anything i didn't need in months...but when i do buy things they tend to be nice

I have a rich mother and a poor father...I grew up with my dad...but would see my mom on the weekends, so Ive seen both worlds. And, I would not trade growing up poor for anything...I learned that things dont make you happy...and you dont need a lot of stuff...and I learned that showing I love you means more than buying gifts. I love my mom and her family...but from them I learned that the more you have...the more you want....and you can still be unhappy .

Anyone who says Yes, is 100% lying. If you were poor you would likely not be able afford Internet access. Just an example one privilege money offers.

    Money is life and liberty.
