yea, that's pretty much how it works.

it got started because in the olden days before DNA testing existed, there was no way to determine who the father of a child definitely was, but obviously everyone knew who the mother was. it was a system to make absolutely sure that the child had some Jew blood.

social laws, and spiritual laws, the mirror thins is a social laws, most of the social laws exist to prevent temptation, and to maintain "cleanliness" the spiritual laws are analog to the latin concept of malum in se, stuff like thou shalt not kill. it has conditions under which it is allowed, but, it's complicated.

edit: I believe there is a third class of law too, but I had too little sleep last night, and my memory of jewish law is sketchy to say the least.
