most Ashkenazi jews are genetically similar because they rarely "intermarried" with Gentiles or others for a long time. they kept to themselves until very recently. but that isn't what makes them Jewish.
the orthodox are insane though. like extremists in any religion. I personally know more "half Jews" than full Jews.
there is a wide variety of people in the jewish community. traditionally there are tenets against intermarrying. based on scripture, which is taken very seriously. as of recently opinions on this has varied quite a lot and more and more openness is being seen. there are still those who believe the old ways are best and that you must follow all of the scripture to the best of your capabilities, though.
quite true, and i'd say my experience closely lines up with yours. but it does not invalidate a history of scripturally based marital norms.
It is a bit of a cliche and kind of a long winded story leading to a question. But this one day my (Jewish) friend was helping his father move his supplies from an old office to a new office. Two or three of my friends came along because we were offered twenty dollars to help. Now his father was a multi millionaire lawyer in one of the most expensive counties in the the USA. At one point, when unpacking his dad's credit card machine, he plugged it in and swiped his card to make sure the transaction went through and that the machine worked (after the move). He charged himself a penny. I figured this would be the end of it. Of course he swiped his card again and we all wondered what he was doing and asked. To which he replied matter of factly as if we were kind of dumb for asking "I'm not giving my dad any of my money (a penny)." At this point it should have become clear to all of us that we were not getting paid for helping him. And of course we never got paid. So my question is, not so much about the twenty, I could care less at this point, but about the penny, you aren't that kind of Jew are you? haha Be honest. Also - another question. I met a Jewish Israeli and he stayed at my place for a few days. A number of times he mentioned something about birth right. Apparently all Jews between 18-25 can go to Israel all expenses paid for ten days and get a tour and all that. Have you heard of this? Have you done it? Are you thinking of doing it? Apparently it is supposed to connect Jews from all over the world. Google birth right or something.
kind of, but no. I am not in any way religious, never been Bar Mitzvahed, can't speak a word of Hebrew, don't really participate in the culture except for having cedars once a year and opening presents on Channukah, but I am still a Jew and always will be because my mom is Jewish.
Yea your mom is Jewish but why do you accept you're a jew cause she is one, cause it's part of the jewish culture to believe that the mother passes it on.. it's definitely not anything in her blood like a physical property like heredity..
EXACTLY (what I was getting at earlier). PS: Where the hell is Piaf to tell me more about sweet sweet Diana, damn.
as i understand it this is true, but its only free for you if you've not gone before. i dont really know, but i dont think that from 18-25 you get unlimited free vacations to israel
to the first question: no, I'm not that type of Jew, but I do eat babies and enjoy committing deicide. I am aware of the Israel thing, and I've thought about doing it just for the hell of it because I'm sure it would be fun, but I'm kind of indifferent. I appreciate my status as a Jew but I do not seek out other Jews because I don't like the herding instinct. I prefer to take people at face value and will not like someone more or less depending on their background.
it isn't just the Jews who say this, it is pretty much accepted by the world. if you don't believe me look it up. I know it seems weird because no other culture/religion does this that I am aware of, but that's how it works. I still call myself a half Jew because it's less misleading to most people.
