Charise are you sure? In California you have to be registered to vote in any election. Maybe that accounts for what happens in Texas.

And let those who were unfortunate enough to go to prison rot there?

What Kucinich is talking about is decriminalizing it. Which means we could still buy from our dealers but not have more than a predetermined amount (like an ounce) in our homes at a time. I think if you do have more than an ounce it must belong to another resident in the home. At least that's how it is in other states. I think that's pretty fair.

Why qualify it? If a person can have an ounce on him at any given time, Why shouldn't he be able to fill his home with his drug of choice if he so desires? I think the issue is idealistic rather than practical. The government should not be in the drug trade, especially not as the sole provider, and should not be able to dole out to the public only what it wishes. That said, I suppose, practicaly speaking, legalizing and taxing weed would at least be a step in the right direction as far as building up acceptance and easing the country into broader freedoms in the future.

Of course you have to be registered to vote-the point I was making is that you don't have to be registered as a Republican or Democrat to vote in the primaries-there's no party registration in Texas for voting purposes. You can vote in the Democratic primary one time, and the Republican the next. Pressed Rat was saying that to vote for Paul he would have to register as a Republican, and I said that it's certainly not that way in Texas.

When you register, what exactly do you sign?

You sign a card that asks for your age and ss#, address, etc. There's no mention of party affiliation or anything like that. I can vote in the Democratic primary this time, and the Republican one the next. If I vote in the Republican primary, for example, my voter registration card will be stamped indicating that I voted in that primary on that day-the reason is that if there is a runoff election, I can't vote in the Democratic primary runoff-I have to vote in the Republican runoff for that primary. Otherwise, I can vote in any party's primary that I want to.

I registered as a republican, as you have to do in IL (honestly I'm not sure, but I do believe thats how it is). Does that now make me a republican? Well, I do agree with the definition of what Ron Paul gives as republican... I agree with him... call me what you will, my vote goes to the individual no matter what party they run under.

Do you honestly think I believe that? My comment was meant as a joke, but I agree with you, we have far too many people in prison for drug-related charges--prisoners who we, as tax payers, are supporting. By making it legal, we remove the beurocracy of drug enforcement, which we also support, and we remove the criminal element which causes much of the violent crime involved in drug trafficing. Instead of spending all that money on drug inforcement and prisons, why not spend it on social programs to train people who are less priviledged, so that they have opportunities to provide a livelihood for themselves without drugs?

Though I will never register republican, I agree it's counter productive to think in terms of partisan politics at this point. As far as I'm concerned, neither the republicans nor the democrats are on the side of the people any more, most of our government has become a plutocracy. I'll vote for whoever I feel has the best interests of the people at heart.

My fear now is that we might not get a chance to vote for a long time, now that bush & co have the authority to declare martial law in a state of emergency, and I'm pretty sure they'll find a way to start a war with Iran as a means to do just that.

Being from Texas, I fear I must register Republican in the upcoming primaries as well in order to vote for Ron Paul. Ron Paul may be running on the Republican ticket, but, be assured, he is a Libertarian.

I Started This Thread, And I Think It Is Very Rude Of You To Delete My Thread And All The Posts That People Wrote Reponding To My Thread Question "if The Elections Were Held Today, Who Would You Vote For?" I Understand This Is Your Website And So You Can Do Whatever You Like, But I Think That Was Way Uncool Of You To Act Like You Made This Thread When You Didn't. I Am Tired Of All The Rude, Name Calling People On This Website, That Is Supposed To Be "monitored". I Wrote You An E-mail Concerning All This. I Hope You Take The Time To Read It As You Obviously Have Time To Lie And Try To Call A Thread Your Own When It Is Not. I Will No Longer Have Anything To Do With Hippy.com. I Think Your Actions Are Very Un-hippy-like.

Just a random question here, and maybe it's been discussed already, earlier in the thread, but why so little love for John Edwards? I liked him when he ran w/John Kerry (OK, he was/is a bit arrogant at times, but I can forgive that), and I still like him a lot.

    Thoughts? Positive/negative/non-committal?

If you live in Texas, you don't have to register as anything to vote in the primaries-in fact, there is no party registration in Texas for voting purposes. All you have to do is go down and vote. Your voter registration card will be stamped indicating that you voted in the Republican primary to prevent you from also voting in the Democratic primary on the same day (or vice-versa). Other than that, you have the freedom to vote in any primary that you want to and you don't need to register as anything.

Edwards is cool. I don't like his hair but shit..Im goin with Obama. Before I say this I want to make it clear that I respect everyones personal opinions here, but in my honest opinion, a vote for ron paul (if he runs 3rd party), who will not win the election, is one less vote for the best candidate that COULD win the election. Something to keep in mind...

the only reason Ron Paul or any underdog candidate for that matter will not win is because most people in this country have been brainwashed to vote against candidates and not for them. We would not have a 2 party dominated government if it weren't for this fact. C'mon now people don't throw away your vote on a scumbag (not calling any particular candidate a scumbag because most politicians are) just because you think they are the better of the two evils.

OK, so now it's down to Obama...or Ron Paul...We'll see how it goes on Tuesday. If it comes down to a contest between Obama and Ron Paul, I'll probably vote for Ron Paul, but I think it's a hell of a lot more likely Obama will be a choice than Ron Paul, I hope I'm wrong...

The Grateful Dead are reuniting to support Obama tonight.
    See article here: http://www.reuters.com/article/lifestyleMolt/idUSN0147632420080202?rpc=64

I think, like me, they are much more liberal than libertarian, and that they believe that government can do some good. I am not surprised at all that they don't support Ron Paul, for example, because his policies would certainly hurt working men and woman and help corporations, although he seems to have tricked a lot of people into believing otherwise. At least some of those people get all their economics information from politicians and pundits instead of text books.

I think Norm Chomsky can explain it better than me: http://www.anarchismtoday.org/News/article/sid=74.html so I won't even try.

I'm all for Obama. He may have some difficulties cleaning up after the huge, bloody mess, the clusterfuck and cesspool of a quagmire that these miserably incompetent fools who call themselves Christian Right-wing, Neo-conservatives, got ourselves in, but hey, but another Bush-clone like McCain would be... stupid, to say the least.

I think, progressive minded people from blue states will vote for Democrats, particularly Obama.

Red states on the other hand, as usual, will vote for Jesus. ;)

Obama got my vote last night, let's hope I get another chance to vote for him again.

As for the comparison between Ron Paul and Obama, you may be right, Ron Paul may have everyone tricked, no way to really know 'till they get in office. Some see his goal of reducing government as a good thing, but as we've seen time and time again, deregulation often opens the doors for the corporate powers to exploit the masses.

    Now that's funny.

Wow, I just read that Obama took my state in an "upset victory", 51% to 47% over Hillary, pretty cool, I'm glad I voted for him. Now, if more states could just do the right thing...

Obama! I posted why elsewhere so I won't beat a dead horse. I love Hillary too, and I was an awfully big fan of Edwards. And if I thought for a second Kucinich had a chance, I'd give him the entire contents of my savings account and probably a blowjob too.

But it's down to Obama and Hillary, and Obama takes it for me by a tiny margin.
