If You Were Expecting A Good Old "Aussie Drawl" You Could Be In For A Surprise..... Nearly Every Englishman I Meet Asks Me What Part Of The UK I Come From, So I Tell Them The "County Of Durham", Then I Pause And Say My Family Left There In 1852. Friends Have Noted A Big Change In My Voice Since The Family Farm Was Sold And I Have Moved On To The Next Chapter In My Life. I Respond........I Always Spoke Like This Until I Started Hanging Out With The "Wrong Company". Usually Leaves Them Speechless Till They Have Time To Process It...... . Cheers Glen.
I grew up in an upper-middle class community west of Boston which left me with no discernible accent only a cultured voice which only indicates to most where I didn’t grow-up. Hotwater
Most people tell me they love British accents. Then they hear mine....I don't think its quite what they had in mind. Most English people can tell the difference between american accents broadly speaking, like the difference between southern and northern states, but I couldn't tell you the difference between city accents within those regions.
I exaggerate. its not terrible. I imagine that people assume that English people from London talk either in a cockney accent or in a posh accent. I speak in a south London accent that used to be a lot stronger and is now pretty mild, so I think it just defies certain expectations. These days I don't think I'd blow anyone's minds, I just sound fairly bland. You can still come cotch at my yard for schubz though. Come we go chicken shop.
I posted this video of a scrawny me in the forums like three years ago where you could hear my voice. I don't have anything more recent uploaded at the moment, but this video below is from 2012. I will upload another, less dopey/dorky video in due time. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9co5kftb83k
I wonder if PR has one of those nasally NY accents. I used to work in a call center and as such I'm pretty unimpressed with all American accents, they all kinda make me cringe.
Maybe the diversity of american accents sound better in movies than over the phone You can hear it in the last post on page 1 of this thread
I'd love to hear McChuffy.. Aeri.. Ash.. Scratch... Turtle.. Lots of folks! Group Skype one of these days? Is that even possible? Group skyping? I've never skyped but I hear it is a thing. I have a strange chameleon accent. I tend to pick up the local sounds.. Which was annoying when I lived in Germany. Ach! At the moment, it's hillbilly southern (yuck). Unless I'm drinking and then it's me father's brogue.
