There are so many reasons that people are fat these days. Most of those people don't even realize how they are getting fat or how to lose the weight. They probably think they know but obviously they don't because otherwise I would guess that they would change what they are doing (assuming they don't want to be obese). Then you have some obese people who have of the attitude "These 350 lbs are beautiful and what god gave me. Other people are just jealous that I love myself the way I am".....ok....get the fuck out of here with that silly ass bullshit! And you know something else? I have told people (who asked) exactly what they need to do to get into great shape and guess how many of them actually have followed my advice? Almost none of them!! The few who have are looking good now. Some of the others look at me like I just spoke a foreign language to them. It sounds too hard for them so they don't even give it any serious effort. So go ahead.....run on the treadmill for an hour and then go home and make some chicken patties and scalloped potatoes from a box. And....it doesn't cost much more to eat healthy foods. You just have to put a little effort into it and be willing to learn.
(Re #59) That's a wonderful skill to have. But don't you think that your BS detector works in conjunction with your currrent set of beliefs, your worldview, so that if a new idea appears that doesn't agree with your pre-conceived notions, it smells like BS to you? That's what great about the scientific method. It is nearly perfect in detecting the things that are untrue because of the way it works. This works better in the hard sciences, like climate science, than it does in fuzzy areas, like economics.
Ace_k made an interesting 1st reply to this thread. Go check it out. First, nothing personal against Ace, I know we all walk according to what we have learned and how we understand things. // When people explain away things about our current state of world affairs/human condition to a time long ago back in some fairy world when people were "hunter/gatherers" and roamed the earth like vagabonds. Back in the day before the "advent" of agriculture that lead to the first "civilizations" (that apparently appeared out of thin air according to this model of understanding). What a bunch of nonsense. Q: For example, a question often comes up about why are we so obese and fat today? Then someone will say, "back when we were "hunter and gatherers" we had to store energy because we could go periods without food, so fat was burned" but now "we have such technological advancements that our evolution has not caught up so the fat is stored"...or something like this. These "advancements in technology" rob man of his destiny (which 99% of the people have no idea what it is), pits man in competition for his basic needs against machines and do little for man except allow the oppressive powers to more efficiently rob the earth for their own leisure. And yet here we are, the people, warring against each other on this stupid issue, when we are misguiding our frustrations. How about people are fat, IN PART, today because the oppressive powers collect up all the land (which they do not own) and steal all the recourses from it (which they do not own) from the people and in turn make a wonderful system of dependence and profit of the decay of the people and control their basic needs (which has a price)... the oppressors puts the most vile nutrients on the corner blocks and in the stores, after having removed successfully all the farming knowledge and culture from the minds of the people with the public indoctrinating school systems...and due to the lusts of man, we all fell for it. Schools which only prepare it's pupils with the spirit of fierce competition with fellow man and how to think like the oppressor, knowing only what is needed to be part of the economic machinery, which in turns creates hell on earth, which in turn is tempting, luring and poison. There are so many examples. This model excuses and justifies mans greed, lust and corruption that in turn oppresses and reduces man to mere animals. This whole caveman evolution theory of man is really void of true history and science. I hate this simplistic, ignorant and shallow understanding. Like the business model, it's a dog eat dog world. This is a good one. What say you?
what I said was explicit, i never said anything about our behind behind in evolution, whether or not that's the case (I don't think it is, but im not sure either). obviously if storing body fat served no beneficial purpose then we would not evolved the genes that cause this to happen. whether your living 100, years ago or today, it serves as a means to survive if for some reason you are forced to go without food for a few days because there is a shortage. I do believe that it's true that people living as hunter gatherers would expend more energy obtaining their food that people do today. I also believe that even so, many people today probably still consume much more food than said hunter gatherers. that is part of the problem, it's part of the culture these days to serve big portions, and to eat junk food just because there's nothing else to do. some of other things younsaid are on point, the economic model, and the culture that goes with it are greatly to blame. everything has to be monetized to the maximum extent. everything is optimized to yield as much profit as possible, with as little overhead and at the same time the quality gets shittier and shitter and people don't seem to even care, I mean people worship this kind of stuff. the big companies are basically raping us and forcing us to pay them for said rape. and people just bend over and take that big cock in the ass and then beg for more. I always think about how a company with enough money can market complete and utter shit and still get rich. it's disgusting really. I think they could market fucking dog crap and people would still buy it. the prices that society places on certain things are grossly out of proportion with their actual value. designer clothes and other bullshit sell for hundreds or even thousands of dollars even though it's made from the same fabric using the same manufacturing process as a an item of clothing at Walmart except one of the is cool cuz it has someone's name on it who's "cool", so it's not what it is, but who is selling it. the microprocessor in a cheap calculator is orders upon orders of magnitude more complex that some peice of fabric, no matter how cool people think it is and takes a lot more talent to design but those kindof microprocessors cost pennies on the dollar, even after 300% markup it's still only what < $10? but it's just a calculator, people don't think theres anything to it. thing is, these celebrities put their name on some crap like they designed it and all that and that's what makes it sell for big $$$. but really somebody else designed it and they just put their name on it, because otherwise no one would really be interested in looking twice at it and certainly not throwing down that kind of cash. most celebrities probably not even competent enough anyway and frankly I dont give one motherfuck about celebrities.
I am so happy that I have been blessed with the genetics that lean towards being lean. It almost gives one a sense of superiority. Some might just think that is shallow but wait, of course not as I am slender and have the right to rail on those who are not. This thread makes me fucking ill.
I, for one, don't think I was railing on anyone (except for the people who are so proud to be obese that they want to make their kids the same way) but I do think there are many factors involved and I don't think a lot of people understand what those factors are. I was just talking to someone a couple of weeks ago who told me that starving herself was the only way she thought she could lose weight. Everyone is a little different but I can promise you that starvation isn't the long-term answer. It will backfire but some people are desperate. But again....there is exactly one way to burn fat and people either want to get with the program or they don't. When they reach out to me at the gym, I tell them what they need to do and it's up to them if they do it or not. I try not to judge but there is no magic bullet. It takes dedication and many people aren't willing to dedicate themselves that way.
There is no grey area when it comes to burning fat. Lean muscle burns fat. It's the only thing that does. End of story. Period. All of the fads and all of the diets and all of the newest books mean absolutely nothing if you don't burn fat with lean muscle. I don't care how much you run or how much you starve yourself and pray to whatever god you hope will help you. It comes down to diet and lean muscle. It's actually very simple but again....many people will not dedicate themselves to it because it does interfere with what they've been conditioned to live for/with. You have to recondition your mind to a new normal. Then you will be successful.
How would you instruct a physically disabled person to burn fat? You could use an 80 year old person who had limited joint mobility as an example.
I admit...that can be a problem. But I don't think it's impossible. I'm kind of in that situation with my grandpa who is 86. It probably depends on the person and what they are capable of doing. That person may not be able to hit the weights at all but they can still control their diet and diet is probably 70% of the effort. Even the guys I work out with who are huge will still say that most of it is diet. It mostly happens in the kitchen and that is the biggest part of the dedication.
Actually, a calorie deficit is what burns fat. But it also burns muscle, so if you want to get LEAN and not simply skinny, then you would want to incorporate resistance training with dieting while making sure to consume adequate protein. But a person can easily lose weight simply by restricting their caloric intake. I would not say that alone is the optimal way to lose weight, but you will lose weight if your body uses up more calories than it consumes.
Burning fat is not the same as losing weight...and vice versa. And sorry...you're incorrect. Muscle burns fat. Nothing else does.
This is off topic and another time I will start the topic...don't answer here but be thinking...I'm going to need help putting muscle and fat back on my emaciated husband. Like I said, it's for another thread after he's had some more testing done.
I'll keep an eye out for the thread....and I shouldn't say PR is wrong. It's mostly just semantics IMO.
