I'm not going past the 3rd page of this. I can't imagine how some people might feel to come to this thread and see such shallow crap. Look at all the open minded people here. They love talking about how race doesn't matter to them, or how sexual orientation, or taboo sexual fetishes and lifestyles should be looked at without bigotry. Yet they just seem to take it for granted that overweight people become overweight because of laziness??? Some people have injuries that contribute to weight gain. Some people have paralyzing depression that contributes to weight gain. I'm sure there are those here that will argue that they have overcome injuries, or mental difficulties to lose weight - I say that's great, and congratulations, but not everyone has the same problems or influences. Feel good about yourselves for looking down on a group that is not like yourselves, fit people.
Although it may be expressed and described in a way that makes it look shallow, it seems to me that most people in here talking about how eating too much faulty stuff and moving too less (laziness) is the main reason why most fat people are being fat are aware it is a generalisation. And the generalisation seems right. More than half of fatty people (figure pulled out ass) are fat because of their diet and lack of exercise.
Come on give us thin people a break; if current trends continue people who look like New Jersey Governor Chris Christie will dominate the planet. 2082 Olympics featured events. Hotdog Eating Contest The Cannonball, Tidal Wave, and Tsunami, Olympic Pool Competition Downhill Bare-Belly Slide Hog Tossing’, Grilling, and Eating competition Synchronized Floating/Sinking Pizza Discus throw Revolving Door and Turnstile obstacle course Armpit Serenade No-Hands Pie Eating Contest Mud Pit Belly Flop Watermelon Seed Spitting 100 Yard Marathon Trampoline Busting Wrestling Greco-Romaine with Thousand Islands dressing Equestrian / Banned! Key words in my post are "some people". Some people are fat because of illness, or injury. I find it just as amazing how SOME people congratulate themselves for being open minded, yet find a group that is different from them to look down upon. Give you thin people a break??? I could stand to lose a few, but I'm not fat.
Well I think the keypoint to realize is the couple of people you are talking about that really seem to look down on this group of fatties do NOT look down on people that got fat due to horrible depression or an unfortunate dependence on certain meds. They look down on the ones that are stuck in a very unhealthy routine either because of laziness and apathy or because they're just really ignorant. Just because they generalize their statement does not mean they're not acknowledging that a minority of obese/overweight people are so because of different reasons
Yeah, I know. I still stand by my post. I can't imagine how people who struggle with their situation must feel, coming to a place that is accepting of nearly all types of people, only to find people calling them lazy. I know people are just expressing their opinion, as am I. And congrats to all you people here who are better than the lazy people who are just asking to be fat.
If they would call specific individuals lazy just because they happen to be obese I would agree with you. But they are talking about lazy fat people with bad diets in general. The group you mention is a generalized group, if someone would take offense or feel sad by projecting it on themselves when that is not really what is happening who is causing the distress really?
People who are fat because they eat too much crap and don't exercise are really victims of modern culture IMO. I'd say they are sick and in need of help rather than just criticism.
We are again talking about a generalized group. When we look at 'people who are fat because they eat too much crap and don't exercise' some may be gullible enough to be declared victims of modern culture and it makes sense. Some are simply and primarily victim of their own lack of discipline and/or apathy and ignorance.
So? I'm sure enough people in the past perished because of ignorance, lack of discipline and/or apathy. That they just keep on living and growing in these times does not mean those aspects are not primarily human. Modern culture can be awesome if we use our brains. It is already in a lot of cases. We just need to adjust to what is available to us now. If we do not because we prefer to ignore the warnings, can't gather up the amount of discipline needed to improve our diet or the amount we move is it the fault of modern culture or our own?
Yes, I consider myself a typical product of my time and culture as well. But when I am apathic, lacking discilpine or ignorant I would not say that it is so because of modern culture AT ALL. It may count to a certain degree for other people where their apathy and/or ignorance depend more on their position in society/culture than in my case, but then it is still better described that they are a victim of particular circumstances instead of a victim of these aspects that are part of modern society (as they are more so aspects of humans as a whole than just of the current modern culture)
OK. I'm not saying we don't have to potential to get more self discipline or cease to be lazy and apathetic. But when I look back in time to conversations I used to have with my Grandmother about life in the 30's when real hunger etc was a fact of life, I can't help but wonder. Also looking back to when I was young in the 60's and 70's - one didn't see very fat people very often. Now they are everywhere. So I conclude that something has changed - and as you point out, it isn't human nature.
