why do people hate hippies?

Well considering hippies have been around for 40 years I would say it was time for a change wouldnt you? Its hardly the avantgarde of youth cuture to do what your grandad did to rebel is it?
In Britain at least, since the hippie days there have been oh at least 7 major youth trends which informed western tastes that have all come and gone.
If you describe yourselves as a hippy in Britain people think you are mad
and obviously havent heard that its not 1966 anymore

Columbo, if you feel that way, why bother being here. Obviously, the people who post here and enjoy it have no interest in "being the "avantgarde" of youth culture. And many of us are way beyond our youth.

People hate us because we are not afraid to speak our minds. We are treated differnetly because we are differnet. Some people just can't see the beauty of individuality.

 

My ex hates hippies because his uncle was spit on when he came back from 'nam (he was drafted). He hates my clothes, my music (most of it anyway esp. the Dead & moe.), my mind set etc. and you can see why we're exes. i wouldn't box and label myself strictly as a hippie per se because i get into a lot of goth stuff too but i'm definitely labeled and looked down upon.

 

people hate honesty who feel they are getting something out of dishonesty. that is what the reason has always been. hippie is just the name that media slapped on people who were willing to be honest in the face of the unpopularity of doing so at that particular time in the mid to late 60s. who were willing to accept having their reputations shredded in order to remain honest.

On subject though - As I have explained before - I dont dislike hippies much less hate them, however I wondered if they might be despised because they think they have some kind of ownership on the rights to peacefull living and living in harmony with nature and that makes, normally peacefull non-hippies feel violent toward hippies - its not that they are jealous but think that hippies are smug little twats with an "I told you so" attitude to the environmental issues - also they take drugs and tell everyone thats good when clearly it cant be else they would be rich. Also it may be because hippies are full of shit about what being a hippy is../ "We dont want to join with society MAAAAAN!! BS say those who dont like hippies - society doesnt want you, you smoke too much dope to get up for work and whinge on about how people who dont smoke dope earn a living.

I dfont know its all just a guess but I would imagine its something like that

 

Well, I think people could learn somethings from hippies, Like, "Be an individual" or "You Don't need to wear fashionible clothes you probhibly hate". If people were a bit more open minded and relaxed a little, maybe the world wouldn't be in so much shit.

I can see where your coming from. Seeing Happy, liberal people around can get you down if you work a 9 to 5 routine in an office, But the trick is, BE YOURSELF. Come in to an office job without a tie, petition for casual fridays, have a different desktop background to your collegues. Frankly, BE YOURSELF!

By the way, there are many ways to be rich besides in money, and that's what's important.

 

Personally though I know some hippies and they are nice pleasant people who own about 10 Acres of land and grow christmas trees (specifically for christmas)
They also keep some pigs, a goat, a cat etc - wonderful people
On the other hand they dont go around smoking dope but do live the way and life other than that. They have had hippies come to their little farm that just stole loads of stuff and left a mess all over the place and they even found used syringes - Even though they made it clear at the gate to everyone their kids were around and they didnt want anyone using hard drugs like heroin if it was done through a syringe thats what I'm talking about - they found all this after a hippies invite only festi on their land (about 200 people). They said it made them realise that some hippies are "just a load of old scrotes"

 

Exactly!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Same thing, different day, different place. I'm sick of taking up the slack and cleaning up after a bunch of fakes. I'm glad I know plenty of the other kind...

 

i cant stand when people rag on hippies.... i really dont get it. they must learn from like south park or something and just grow up not liking free spirited free thinkers who enjoy life, are relaxed, and appreciate the simple things in life. hippies are the most chill friendly cool people i know.

 

hippies give the impression of dirty, and society has taught that dirty equals unhealthy. is it true? I dunno.

it was really weird and stupid. my friend just says they feel threatened because im completley comfortable with who i am, easy goin and my own person and for some reason that scares them.

I think people dont HATE us, in all actuallity... I think theyre just scared of us. We do things people find taboo. Maybe we're too liberal and honest, maybe we're too loving... Ever had someone freak out because while they extended ther're hand for handshake, you opened your arms for a hug?

I can understand why some people hate hippies....because all they've encountered were not real. Posers? I've met people that dress the part, do all the drugs, etc. But are anything but hippie. They are the ones giving the bad conotation to the rest.

 

Okay... i don't consider myself a hippie, but I like hippies. Some of my friends complain that they hate hippies, and I asked them "why do people hate hippies?" and they replied that they didn't know. I think that nobody has any REAL reason to hate them; they obviously aren't really bad-smelling just because they're hippies, as I've read in other forums! Nobody has a good reason; they just hate them because everyone else hates them. (well, not everyone hates hippies, but you get what I mean)
