A desire for what is right is never in vain. Criticism it seems must logically always be in vain. If we're pursuing erroneous efforts, our efforts will always be in vain.
people don't want to take responsibility for their actions. It's always easier to blame other things. Make's you feel better if your fat cos of "genetics", or Maccas or whatever.
you fail. surly humor is the worst kind.. are you afraid to just be an asshole without trying to be cute or whatever you're aiming for? I mean really, how old are you? but anyway, what I gathered she was saying is that these 'drug addicts' and hypochondriac mothers you people seem to run into all the time at the ER are there because they don't have insurance or money, and the ER can't deny care. if they did have insurance, they could go to a general practitioner and avoid the excessive ER costs. we need to look at the statistics instead of argue a bunch of ideas. if the rate of obese people seeking medical attention is higher than other groups then, with insurance, the obese are driving up insurance premiums for everyone the most. the self pay probably don't make a significant difference, except maybe taking up too many resources. and the people with no insurance who can't pay would probably have the greatest impact.
You certainly read a lot into her rather simplistic and naive statements. I just took them at face value as conveying what she thinks. Gee, how stupid and shortsighted of me. I guess if everybody read a lot more into what others say and completely reinterpret their statements, rather than taking statements to mean what the words they use convey, the world would be a much brighter place. And in answer to your question, nope, I am quite capable of being a complete, and unabashed asshole, but thankyou for asking.
I've found that being an asshole can be a fine art... especially when it's administered in a manner that delays its comprehension by others.
Not being an asshole is definately overrated. People say it as though it's a bad thing. It can keep people away from you, no one will ask you to baby sit their kids, women won't expect you to buy them dinner or phone them the next day, and no one will want to talk to you on the bus. Seems pretty sweet to me.
I'll make a confession. I'm an ex-smoker and an ex-cocaine addict. Quitting isn't easy. There is lots of scientific evidence that eating fatty foods provides a similar brain response (with the conclusion being that quitting is just as hard). But the difference is, nobody can quit food cold-turkey. Everybody still needs to eat... Which I'm sure makes obesity extra hard to fight. It's also a habit that is often learned in childhood. Old habits are the most deeply ingrained and the hardest to break. I try to be compassionate about what is a hard issue (that has ruined more than a few lives, I'm sure). YMMV.
Why the FUCK is this thread so hooked on blaming the fat people for the downfall of society?!?!? If I were the type of person to blame other people for my choices, I would blame all the "beautiful" people for making fun of me my entire life, forcing me indoors, making me afraid to eat in front of people like I'm undeserving of a meal, therefore hoarding food to eat when nobody's around to laugh at me and tell me not to eat it, and helping me acquire a social disorder that will take years and years to go away. Meanwhile, my health will deteriorate making me a bane to the health(for profit)care system and a downward spiral of depression and compulsive eating/purging will ensue. But, luckily, I don't give one fuck what anyone says so that will never happen to me. :d
I read a lot into everything, that's called critical thinking. and I didn't 'reinterpret' anything. that's my face value understanding of the post. but I'm over my allotted daily minutes for arguing with idiots. be easy.
I smoked for 5+ years, drank heavily daily for another 3-4 years, became 50+ lbs overweight by all of this. Luckily I turned it all around, for the most part. It's funny though, when I was heavy set, stinking of burbon whiskey, strumbling around the streets at night with a cigarette hanging out of my mouth, I don't remember one single person telling me to my face that I'm what's wrong with society.
The point is, those who condemn smokers watch reality tv, or drink and drive, or cheat on their wives, or whatever else. And those who do none of this are no fun to hang out with Let he who is without sin cast the first stone.
