Dude, you should seriously think about what you are saying. I'm just going to end this nonsense before you start to put more words in my mouth and make even more false assumptions about my life/personal views. I really do wish you the best of luck with whatever it is you are struggling coming to grips with in terms of my personal beliefs. I'll gladly share em with anyone, but never force them upon another. Oh, and the last thing I have to comment on is that I find it interesting how you said you hate people like me, always bashing others for their beliefs (which I've never done), then you immediately began bashing mine. (you also deleted that from your post as soon as I commented on it) One Love bro
Erm, wow this thread just ballooned into something weird, let's try and get back on the topic at hand people! ....please
Read through this thread Toejam: http://www.hipforums.com/newforums/s...d.php?t=310679 It doesn't directly address your question in regards to dread kits, however the same reasons as to why I feel dreads (at least for me) are a spiritual and meaningful (symbolic of anti-materialism) are discussed and that's why I personally have a problem with em.
Thanks for that bthizle, it made for some very interesting reading. I think the "awakening" idea is very true, I find it frustrating and shallowminded when my friends and family simply think I'm going through some kind of 'phase' which they think I'll grow out of. Pffft, no way. It is in every way a journey - a journey which can be as complicated or as simple as one makes it. Whatever makes sense to that particular person is fine. I also think that most people who have dreads are spiritually-minded in the first place, otherwise they wouldn't have bothered going to the effort to read about them, and their history, and the various methods for creating them. I remember I was about 9 or 10 when I first saw a person with dreads, and I thought to myself "one day I'm going to have that type of hair, whatever it's called!" (I didn't know what they were called back then). I am so glad that I made my choice, and I intend to commit to it fully. I don't care aobut what people label me as, I don't care if employers will judge me, I don't care if cops will hassle me and accuse me of carrying marijuana, I don't care if people call me names, I don't care about any of that. Dreadlocks to me symbolise freedom of liberty and speech and I also associate them with artistic pursuits and crafts. I don't consider them to be "anti-Society" or anything but I know a lot of people believe that and that's fine by me. One thing's for sure, I'm glad I've read through endless threads about the topic, because it's interesting to hear people's discussions and points of view, even though it can get a bit fiery sometimes. And I think I've learnt the necessary lesson here - I'M NEVER USING WAX AGAIN! EVER!
If someone won't hire you cause of your dreads do you really want to work for them in the first place? The spiritual/meaningful side to them is why I have em, but I think they do an excellent job acting as a sort of test to see how others treat you because of them (ie face value). If anyone has a problem with them, then I can immediately (not in all cases, and I usually don't make assumptions about people, but this is usually pretty dead on) tell they aren't really that "chill" of a person.
I was just using that as an example really, because people always used to steer me away from dreads for this reason (among others). In the end I just thought "fuck it", and adopted the same principles that you explained above. In fact I didn't warn anyone in December last year when I decided to get them - i just rocked up to work one Monday morning and enjoyed watching the looks on people's faces haha I'm still there now, so obviously it wasn't a major concern for them. In fact my boss (who is the least spiritual/laidback person I know) said they made me look older and that she could 'get used to them'. So no complaints here!
