Why Light Speed?

In the book A Short History of Nearly Everything, the author says that Gravity isn't a force, just the result of the bending of space, so is there a Graviton?

Gravity is a force, regardless of what travel writers may say. A force is something that moves energy from one place to another. If you put a rock in orbit around the Earths its aquires energy from the Earths magnetic field as it gets faster. This makes gravity a force, however it is different to most forces.

Other forces are described using quantum mechanics where the interactions between are mediated by other particles. Photon (Electromag), Gluon (Strong), W0 and +/-Z (Weak) the graviton has been provisionally entered for gravity although its not been found. So far gravity has been described using general relativity which says that gravity bends space-time. QM and GR are, for a number of fairly mathematical reasons are often seen as mutually exclusive. Things like superstring theory are attempts to unite them by saying that we're seeing the effects of interactions in higher dimensional space. Which all sounds very good, whether or not its true is anyones guess. As you put it, is it crazy enough to be correct?

Was light created at some point in time, or did it always exist?

Light is one of the most important energies in our known universe! Light was believed to travel at the constant speed of approximately 186,000 Miles Per Second (MPS), but new theories, and experiments, suggest that LIGHT travels at ALL SPEEDS! We only "perceive" of light that travels at approximately 186,000 MPS! Consider the following information:

Rowland Institute for Science in Cambridge, Mass. has conducted experiments in slow-time (light-slowing experiments):

"Nothing travels faster than light in a vacuum, but even light is slowed down in many media. Scientists have manipulated clouds of atoms with lasers so that pulses of light travel through the clouds at one twenty-millonth of their normal speed--slower than highway traffic."

WOW! Light has been slowed down to almost zero velocity! Slower than highway traffic (60 KPH), anyway! That's a big jump down from 186,000 MPS!

FASTER THAN LIGHT?

TACHYONS are particles that travel ONLY faster than light, and NEVER slower! TACHYON DRIVE is supposedly a type of SPACE-TIME craft propulsion system.

SHEAR VELOCITY or INFINITE VELOCITY of LIGHT?

We are constantly shifting between space and hyper-space! The universe is sort of DIGITAL, blinking on and off, but at an incredible speed! Of course, we can't perceive this happening, as it is way too fast to perceive!

From zero velocity to light velocity to infinite velocity. At light velocity, time flow simply reverses! At infinite velocity, you spread across the entire universe, toward infinity and become the universe! YOU ARE EVERTHING AND EVERYWHERE AT ONCE! GOD?

See the LIGHT! So now, how important is light?

Boy I hope thats how it really works

 

Well its been true for sometime that light can be slowed down to walking pace. In Sweden there were even going to be attempts to make a kind of optical black hole though I haven't heard anything so I guess nothing came of it.

There have been a number of superluminal experiments but and physics undergrad will have come across this phenomenon studying fourier series or phase velocities through materials. I have a number of references if people are interested.

As for tachyons i've explained their origin from relativity in a previous thread (maybe this one I cant be bothered to look). A lot of these things seem better in science fiction because that way they seem somehow futuristic and magical. Usually these things are just mathematical entities that have been discarded because right now they make no physical sense. Id like to think that people will have the presence of mind to keep them just in case they become relevant again. Sciences fundamental problem here is that it demands physical proof, as where people imaginations don't. Imagination can be the root of great discoveries but a great scientist is one who can prove his imagination, that is a rare quality indeed.

 

Time runs different for a person in an elevator vs. a person standing still.

I don't think speed of light is so important (for time travel at least). In other words...You could still travel substantially forward in time at speeds slower than the speed of light. Just my understanding of it. Maybe I'm wrong.

So sister particle, you change the spin of one and its sister changes its spin at the same time. They tested them from 7 miles away, and the moment one's spin changed so did the other. How in the world can this happen?

 

Your talking about quantum entanglement, to understand this you have to remember that when we talk about nothing travelling faster than light we mean nothing with any information. If it cant carry information the you can do whatever you want within reason. Quantum entanglement is proof that quantum mechanics is a non-local theory. This means it allows unmediated interactions over arbitrary distance.

I will demonstrate, to describe the state of a two particle system I use the following notation W(1,2), where W is the wavefunction of the system (don't worry) and 1 and 2 are the states of two particles. If we say these states represent angular momentum and allow two particles to interact we get, W(1,2)+W(2+1). This means that the particles cannot be the same thing but we don't know which theres a certain proability that its W(1,2) or W(2,1). Now we let the particles move away from each other to an arbitrary distance could we half way across the universe. We can now measure the angular momentum of one particle, this will change the wavefunction so its now only 1 of the above terms and the same will happen to the other particle instantaneously. However as you would need to send details of how you found the angular momentum with a telephone or something this does not violate causality. This happens everytime particles interact so its not some weird effect it happens constantly.
