While people may wish to single out medicine as being money grabs they also need to think about the millions of dollars spent by the consumers on all health related items. From alternative medicines to supplements, to exercise, to diets and that barely scratches the surface. We all bought into the health craze and spend money needlessly on "things" to supposedly improve health often out of fear and pressure.

Diet, exercise, sleep and awareness will all go a long way in improving our overall health. So will prevention and early diagnosis.

The most often over looked aspect of health is emotional well being. Those who are facing an illness who remain engaged and positive have a far better rate of survival and quality of life. After being far more involved in the medical field as a patient and as a peer leader I have found very few people are afraid of dying instead they are focused on how to live.

Spending money on things to improve health (diet, exercise, supplements) is a lot better than spending it on toxic, outrageously-priced pharmaceutical drugs which poison the body once you're already sick. I don't think taking an interest in one's own health has anything to do with fear and pressure, though I am sure there are exceptions, like there are with just about anything. There will always be people with unhealthy obsessions, but I think that accounts for very few health conscious people who simply strive to be in optimal health while avoiding becoming statistics.

And who doesn't want to have boundless energy and feel good all the time? These are just two of the benefits to leading a healthy lifestyle.

Diet, exercise and sleep awareness IS prevention. Prevention helps to avoid much of the worry that goes along with the early detection of anything. If you live a healthy lifestyle, you don't have to worry so much about the things which regularly afflict people who eat a standard western diet high in processed foods.

Spending money on those things in no way guarantees that you will not at some point become ill enough to require medical assistance. The reality is that many people who have led a lifestyle that was very close to ideal do die from illness before a natural lifespan and often of a disease that they should technically not have had. It is a false sense of security to think that because you think you live well and have a healthy lifestyle that you do not have risk.

While those things are preventive, so is regular screening for detection of irregularities in the body. A blood screen can flag issues, dental examinations can flag issues, eye exams can also flag issues. Being aware of genetic predispositions also are preventive. Testing now is available that calculates high risk.

The one factor that I personally have noted that totally is destructive to health is negativity. Those who tend to be that way do not do well when faced with illness and healing.

Nobody ever said it guarantees anything. However, we are talking about PREVENTION, so it makes sense that diet, exercise and supplementation would go along with that. Yeah, healthy people die everyday, including from freak accidents. I don't use that as an excuse to eat whatever I want.

Not sure where the eat whatever you want came into this. On that, if you eat properly the majority of the time, occasionally eating whatever you want would do no harm to you. :)

Absolutely not. And occasionally I do eat whatever I want, but since changing my eating habits, usually what I want is something fairly healthy, because I just have no desire for junk food. However, I am not above eating ice cream or a slice of pizza every now and then. I keep it to a minimum, though.

I can understand that as I also have an aversion to some foods as they simply do not taste good after not having them for years. For me, anything that smells or tastes like old grease just about finishes it. :)

One new field of research is the role of gut bacteria and how if effects our brains.
There good and bad gut bacteria, eating a diet of unprossessed whole natural foods encourages good gut bacteria, which research is finding may directly effect mental outlook.
This is an exiting new frontier for health science and may prove to be a major link between mental and physical health.

    http://www.npr.org/blogs/health/201...acteria-might-guide-the-workings-of-our-minds
"Gut microbes may also communicate with the brain in other ways, scientists say, by modulating the immune system or by producing their own versions of neurotransmitters.
"I'm actually seeing new neurochemicals that have not been described before being produced by certain bacteria," says of the Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center in Abilene, who studies how microbes affect the endocrine system. "These bacteria are, in effect, mind-altering microorganisms."
This research raises the possibility that scientists could someday create drugs that mimic the signals being sent from the gut to the brain, or just give people the good bacteria — probiotics — to prevent or treat problems involving the brain."
