ooooooo so that's what that is. Some people asked me that, if I used a kit, and I was like "Kit?? It's not a relaxer. It's locs" And that confuses them and everyone is confused. *confused look* Why don't they just get extensions if they're that impatient and trying to look good to someone else?? *sad face*
father used to call me Matt Marley when my hair started dreading. i cant visit my parents unless im wearing a tam. they'll bitch about how messy my head is for hours it seems.
Poke them with a stick when they complain. I was thinking of just how complicated dreadlocks are now.
seriously there is nothing complicated about locks. it's just matted rope hair. It is them who are complicating it. it's all about how you look at things really
Yeah.. people overcomplicate the simpleness. They want dreadlocks.. which are simple, and then then do all these things to make them look "perfect" and tidy. I always wonder if these people go into like Jamaica or other countries with multitudes of people with "untidy" dreads and go "How come your dreads don't look neat? Aren't you worried about what people will think?" okay that was me rambling..
I paid to have my dreads started by backcombing and crocheting. The guy sectioned them beautifully and made them neat. Guess what? They started to do their own thing soon after. I do a little bit of maintenance about once every 5 months if they need it, but it depends on what I feel like. Whatever method you choose, you're still on the same path as everyone else. Some people have neat locks, some have crazy ones. Who are you to judge what method someone uses to dread their hair? Actually, why should you care? It's funny how some people with dreads are more elitist to other people with dreadlocks than to anyone else. It rubs against the tolerance towards people 'doing their own thing' with their hair - something which people love dreads for. Treasure your locks, whatever their style.
lets see them locks bro. ohh and theres always going to be elitist within in a social group. their importance in this forum is to enforce standards and represent the various parts of the dreadlocked community. it is absolutely necessary if you dont want people thinking your just a stoner hippie pot head with dirty locks. peace.
Having elitists is necessary? I thought having soap and water was necessary to not have dirty locks. ...There's a difference between well formed locks and neat locks, which a lot of people don't seem to get. I personally think having 60 locks that all look exactly the same, with NO irregularities or anything is just silly looking, it's like an oxymoron... you want tangled hair. but you want it in perfect, identical tangles? I mean, you see it and it's like... I bet you've spent more time on your messy hairstyle than I have in WoW....
Well, when people spend weeks of thier life doing thier hair it does keep them out of trouble, can save them money by not going out, doesn't bother anyone (does it?). I say have at it. The Bablyonians are growing stronger yet.
This is going to be one of those responses.. soooo If you're calling me an elitists or whatever, have fun with that. Seriously. When I walk outside, I'm not kidding about the onslaught of negativity.. and I live in a supposed liberal college town. Why? Because my hair doesn't look like what people think dreads should be, especially other dreadheads. People can say all they want about how negative comments don't bother them ever, but it does get on your nerves to hear people tell me over and over that my dreads "aren't right" because they don't look neat, or the same. But that's not elitism right? Besides, I don't have nor feel like spending $300 on my hair.. and that would only be the first steps. I have dreads because I let my hair do it's own thing. I didn't force them any way. I didn't force the hair to go in a way to be neat. My hair is strong and actually healthy for a change. I actually want to keep my dreads forever. I said this before, but unlike a lot of people, it isn't just hair to me. Hate me for it all you want. and yes, it does help to combat the new stereotype of dreadlocks that in order to have "good" dreads, you have to pay for it. *sploo*
i wasnt talking about what is necessary to have clean locks....more on the lines of whats necessary for others who are ignorant on the subject of dreads to believe that locks are clean and not dirty and smelly like the stereotypes. say mr.joe shmoe was watching a national geographic program about the devout Sadhus of India who religiously neglect their hair(their locks get pretty dirty and ratty lookin). now mr. joe is intrigued by their locks and would like to do some personal research about. he gets on google and types dreadlocks and finds this forum as one of the results. just from reading the FAQ(a FAQ created by some one whom you might consider an "elitist") mr. joe now is enlightened. he no longer believes in the stereotypes of locks and could possibly use this new found information in conversation with others or to properly educate others on dreadlocks in the modern world. as more stuff like this happens, us dreadheads become more socially acceptable and it would probably make getting a job a bit easier.
lol Well said! And who are the elistist? The ones with the uniform dreads or the ones that are not uniform? I mean...
