This thread really should be called: Will the Religion of Evolution lead to the end of mankind... If we do not wake up, yes.
But common sense is not sound. it is the majority, not the minority who believe the earth is 6,000 years old.
Actually, in most of the world, ie outside of christian-extremist USA, most people consider the scientific method pretty solid and so do not buy into the idea of a 6000 year old world. Actually, the Koran says their religion should be spread through conquest (I forget the exact wording). And in the Old Testament, despite the 10 commandments, there are several references to death as a suitable penalty (For example for homosexuality, and the number of times God kills people is quite shocking) While I agree with your premise that it is we humans who are brutal and use religion as justification, those so-called holy scriptures are far from free of violence.
Evolution is healthy. To say it is a lie is like saying that two beautiful people cannot make love and conceive an even more beautiful person. The religious are sick of themselves and want to join up. Unfortunately most think they have to die to do so. I pulled a Jesus and forgave them for this ( as they couldn't seem to be able to do it themselves ;D) It's funny, if you can't walk the walk, you can't talk the talk! Recognize! : D
So you're familiar with the scientific evidence supporting the theory that has convinced the overwhelming consensus of scientists that it's a valid scientific theory--superior to any other out there? What aspects of the theory do you find problematic from a scientific standpoint? Is there another scientific theory that better supports the available facts?
religion is often blamed for war.. but i don't think religion is specifically a big threat. its often used as a reason for war.. but war is inherently driven by our drive for power.. more land, more resources, a bigger ego.. moremoremore. religion can end tommorow and it won't change a thing, people will still be full of greed and hate.
I'm not sure We all have beliefs, beliefs are a neat thing and people should cherish them, but I think people should keep their beliefs to themselves..
people should keep their beliefs to themselves? that's a terrible idea, people should be open about their beliefs and discuss them in order to refine them.
Earlier this week both government and private institutions in the United States came under cyberattack from sources believed to be Chinese, and this isn't the first time this year this has happened. Is that something to worry about? Do you think it had anything to do with religion? Granted there were some religious issues (but also economic and geopolitical issues) in the conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan, and of course the Crusades and some wars in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries were ostensibly about religions. But let's talk about World War I, World War II, the Korean War, the War in Indo-China, the Crimean War and the Boer War, the U.S. Civil War and Revolutionary War, the War of 1812, the Napoleonic Wars, the War of the Roses, the Punic Wars, the Persian wars, the Pelopenesian War. etc.--what was the role of religion in those conflicts? Don't think too hard; there was none.
I don't know if religion or religious people will lead to the downfall of humankind, but surely religious people are much more excited about the end of our world than atheists. Many cannot wait for Armageddon. Some are absolutely thrilled at the prospect.
