I think a bit the same of the 2 first post... the worst to the best "A momentar lapse of reason"(87) is nearly horrible just saved from the sub-zero by 2 tittles sadly recorded with bad 80's fm production "The Final Cut"(83) is more Waters in solo and include 2 -3 good things "Division Bell" (94) sound too radio friendly but still had 4 or 5 songs not without interest. Then maybe "Ummaguma" (69) a bit too overloaded ...too rich & sometimes boring... it has sometimes some of the most experimental floyd tunes... Really adventurous & bizarre but contain too many tracks ...some don't need to be there... and the floyd is clearly in search of their future sound...
I think a lot of the stuff up until Gilmour was the frontman was great. I can't really pick a specific one as being the worst, but I'd be a Gilmour era one for sure.
Atom Heart Mother is a good case, I think, for being thrown into the dustbin and never listened to by anyone ever again! [...] It was pretty kind of pompous, it wasn't really about anything. - Roger Waters - Rock Over London Radio Station - March 15, 1985, for broadcast April 7/April 14, 1985. Some of it now, like Atom Heart Mother, strikes me as absolute crap, but I no longer want or have to play stuff I don't enjoy. - David Gilmour - November 1994 from wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Atom_Heart_Mother) Although I disagree with them.
I like Division Bell. I thought it was a pretty interesting album. I'd have to say I'm not overly fond of Momentary Lapse of Reason. It has two good songs. Same for me for Piper at the Gates of Dawn. There are only two songs I like in that whole album (Astronomy Domine and Flaming) But I'm just not a Syd Barrett fan. I don't believe going crazy makes you a genius. So for worst album it's between MLOR and PATGOD. I've never heard Final Cut, so I can't comment about that. just for kicks and giggles, my favorites are: 1. Wish You Were Here 2. Animals 3. Dark Side of the Moon 4. The Wall 5. Obscured By Clouds ~Layla
piper is the worst, according to you?? damn. usually, true floyd fans praise that album, and rightfully so. critics even praise it, its probably one of the best floyd albums, IMHO. its different than all the rest too.
I am very much a true Floyd fan. I have- and listen to quite a great deal- every Floyd Album besides Final Cut. I just don't think PATGOD is that impressive. It's mostly babble. It has it's moments, but I think Dave was a better guitarist, and Roger a better lyricist than Syd. I like Saucerful of Secrets much better than PATGOD. I will admit I love "Jugband Blues" but that's really the only Syd song that has impressed me. ~Layla
damn, thats quite insane. ASOS is pale in comparsion to PATGOD. roger drew alot of influence from syd when it came to songwriting. he will even admit that. but I do agree that dave was a much better guitarist than syd. still ,though, that was a remarkable album, and all of the members at the time were at the top of their game.
I think Saucerful is much better than PATGOD. For example, some of the lyrics on Saucerful actually make sense. As for Roger's songwriting, his contributions to Saucerful were Barrett-esque, but nothing he did afterwards could reasonably be considered the same style of writing. Syd was more of a mental influence on the band than a musical influence. I don't understand everyones love of Syd Barrett. I guess it's that whole Rock and Roll Martyr thing like people do with John Lennon and Kurt Cobain. When I listen to Syd Barrett songs they just sound like random babbling to me (i.e. "Bike") but when I hear Roger songs they sound like his innermost thoughts and feelings made into poetry and set to music. The Roger/Dave/Rick/Nick combo did some of the greatest albums not only in Floyd's history, but the history of Rock and roll. Obscured by Clouds, Dark Side, Wish You Were Here, Animals, The Wall. But people forget all of that to fawn over the man who barely did two Floyd albums and then promptly went Crackers. I AM a true Floyd fan, I Am Not a Syd Barrett fan. ~Layla
I havn't listened to all Pink Floyd albums so I can't really tell... but I think the Wall is really overrated.
yeah, but if it wasnt for syd, you wouldnt be talkin about the floyd. if syd didnt go bonkers, dave would have never been brought into the band. things happen for a reason...... and syd was a major influence on the group, whether you like it or not. and musically he was. ROGER even admits this. he said the strongest lyrics he ever heard were those that are simple....... and he learned this from syd. you said nothing roger did after ASOS was in the same style of writing as syd?? how wrong you are. when roger wrote breathe for DSOTM, he said it was his influence from syd. listen to the lyrics...... breathe in the air, dont be afraid to care, leave, dont leave me, look around, choose your own ground......... all you touch and all you see, is all your life will ever be.......... not very deep to me. if it wasnt for syd, youd probably be talkin about the screaming abdabs, or sigma 6..... not pink floyd....... and definitely not with dave gilmour. hed probably be still in jokers wild. Im not a huge syd fan by any means, but to demean his existance and influence on the group is rather sad. if it wasnt for syd, the group would NOT have existed like it did. he brought in the name, he brought in the success, he brought the lows, which got him forced out to recruit dave gilmour...... and the rest is history.
If Syd had stayed with the band they would've died like many of the other Psychadelic Bands. Syd started the band, I'll give him that. But I still say his influence was mental and not musical. And listening to the lyrics of Breathe I don't hear Syd's influence. If Syd had wrote it it would be nonsensical babbling instead of something very deep and poetic, while still beautifully simplistic. I hate when People think Syd Barrett IS Pink Floyd. Pink Floyd is Roger, Dave, Rick and Nick. That is the lineup that most of their albums were under. Syd did Piper at the Gates of Dawn and some of Saucerful of Secrets. That's It. While it's true Roger wrote Wish You Were Here and the Wall partially about Syd, he was a Mental influence on the band. Not really much of a musical one. He gave them their original direction and after he went crazy they went on to form the sound they are so famous for. So I'm not going to worship Syd like everone else does because he got pushed into martyrdom when he went insane. Crazy doesn't make a musical genius, talent makes a Musical genius. ~Layla
If you can't make sense out of the lyrics on Piper you have a problem, they're much more clear then a good deal of say Roger's over the years. Only real mystery song I'd say is Astronomy Domine.
also, what dont you understand?? look up some interviews with Roger, and he does say that syd's writing influenced him on the song breathe, if you dont realize this, then you are very stubborn. IM not saying syd was the band....... he was a major influence, and without him, would we be talkin about the band today?? no. particularly, I think richard wright made the whole sound of the floyd, but who am I to judge??
Collection of great dance songs was a major bummer, well i agree with some folks that after the acid era the creativity level dropped. I have seen floyd live 3 times & pretty much anything they do live is awsome as fuck.
His influence was musical too its clear as water ...if you put Syd aside (imagine he has never existed) and you choose for ex. the leader of Uriah Heep or other to replace him in 66 & 67 and then him is gone too in 68...the whole sound of Pink Floyd will be different...I dont even think that the band had survived very long with another leader at the beginning...Syd let behind him a very original music...he planted the seeds for their future sound ...water musical architecture was influenced by the original process of the band ... the band started to discover new territories in music from here... the cocoon from where all started was there...the barrett times... it was a bit like the original mother who give birth to the band... The others where like the wheels & he drove the whole things to strange & original places ... And U say that there s just 2 good songs... Hear 'Matilda Mother' & 'Chapter 24' magic mystic sounds... 'Scarcrow and his short superb end...you can even be there in a field of gold in the XVI th century...with at your side a scarecrow movin when the north wind caress his golden stiff hair... Wild imagination this is what Syd offer us...and more the time pass ...more its becoming rare...we live in a time where pop & rock music dont surprise as much as before...they all play the rebel esthetic game...rare are the real original independent fire And i want to tell you ...you say that his madness does not make him a genius(or smthing like that)...this is not a question of madness...i dont judge records by the mental state of his leader... Oh this one is not totally well in his brain... & this other leader of hard rock band drink too much...something is going wrong somewhere... & Why this one smoke so much ...he has more & more bad trips...so why does he continue to smoke highpowerweed? & tell me where is the frontier of mad & not yet mad? ...the mental state of Syd does not have to disqualify his songs & ideas... And by mid 67 when this album was recoded Syd was not yet mad... I think it s clear...pfff I really think you should take Mushroom or LSD and listen to this album with a brand new approach ...you need to fly over your actual point of vue...see the horizon, the shapes & colours of the Pink Floyd of 67...you need distance...
A Momentary Lapese of Reason, however I havn't heard Delicate Soubds Of Thunder. I think The Final Cut is a very good album.
How can you say that there are bad ones? =p Just because something is different doesn't mean that it is bad, saying that meddle is better than momentary lapse of reason is like saying snoop dog is better than jerry garcia. you can like both, dislike both, like one, whatever...but don't dislike one because the other is better come on guys. But if I had to pikc the one that I listen to the least, The Wall would be it...though, the live wall tour has some good ROIOs....anyone into older ROIOs contact me for some sharing
I like all of their albums that I've heard with the exception of "music from the movie MORE". It's kinda crappy if you ask me.
