i do. an older cheap model i got in high school, a nicer Brother brand machine i got for mothers day several years ago, and 2 treadle machines from the 1940's that i dont have fixed up yet. the cabinets are falling apart so its going to be quite the rehab. i will turn one into a treadle multi-tool (interchange a lathe and a wool carder for a start) and the other i will build a new cabinet for and actual get running for sewing. one day. when i have time.

i prefer a drop in bobbin over a slide-in from the front one.
    i prefer "lay in" threading
you should be able to drop the feed dogs, those are the little toothy things that grab the fabric and pull it forward for the next stitch, its good for quilting if you can drop them down.

but for a beginner you need a straight stitch and a zigzag stitch to get by, and most machines have those and then some. sewing is fun! make all the things!

I used to be able to run a mile in under 6 minutes a lot under if I was only going 1 mile. I know I could not do that now.

I have a theory about this, Lynn. So many of those one post wonders write like they are the same person telling fifty different stories. It's either a frustrated writer who changes his/her Dear Penthouse story to fit his mood. Or someone trying to entertain the forum's regular followers. I used to try and answer some of that crap until I noticed the trend.

Whatever (insert Valley Girl Voice here)

I have an old Brothers sewing machine. Very inexpensive and works fine.

My friend has a Singer Featherweight. If you ever see one of those for sale... grab it! I'll buy it from ya. :)

To get started sewing, all you need is a machine that will do straight stitch and zigzag... and if you get brave, buttonholes. I avoid buttonholes. Not brave enough to give that a go, yet. Mostly, I take antique clothes and redesign them and I make hippie purses.

I started sewing because I have to hem everything I buy. Shortness. *sigh*

I used to run the 440 in 54 seconds back in high school... I was mainly a cross country runner, but in the "off season" track was the only thing they let us run.

Irmi, you'll enjoy sewing. Like they said, just get a basic machine. The average person doesn't need all the fancy bells and whistles.
