I read this today. I don't think it's all that weird. It took a lot of different elements to make it possible for life to happen. And at least one of them came from Mars.

They are planning to terraform the planet for colonization in the next few decades so anything we hear about Mars at this point won't really come as a surprise.

I get that feeling too. Like people have inside jokes that I don't get because apparently I wasn't around when something crucial to the joke happened and I'm just doomed to never understand.
